Claims (9)
1. 44259/2 WIIAT I CLAIM I S : 1. A pump assembly adapted for being fixedly secured to a container for soalingly closing the container and dispensing liquid therefrom comprising: a) a mounting cup for being fixedly and sealingly secured to the container and having a central opening of a first predetermined diameter, b) a pump body having a central housing and a lower transverse wall with an inlet opening therethrough, c) . means for communicating the central housing with the interior of the container and the liquid therein through the opening in the transverse wall, d) a plunger mounted in the central housing for axial reciprocation therein having an upper flange and having 1) an upper portion of a second predetermined diameter less than the first predetermined diameter and extending through the central opening of the mounting cup to define a gap therearound, and having 2) a lower end shaped to form a valve member to cooperate with the inlet opening in the lower transverse wall to permit fluid flow therethrough when the plunger is in the raised position and to terminate fluid flow therethrough after an initial downward motion of the plunger, and having 3 ) an axial outlet passage in the upper portion of the plunger; and k ) means at the lower end of said upper portion adapted for communicating with the central housing, e) a piston mounted on the plunger for restricted axial movement between upper and lower flanges thereof, a 44259/2 A between Die outlet passage and the central housing by bl i ng said moans for communic ting a the plunger is rai ed relative to the piston -and to errit communication b tween the outlet passage and the centrr.l housing; by uncovering said means for communicating vrl-en. the plunger is depressed relative /to the piston, the central housing, the lower, transverse vail and the piston being a variable volume pump chamber for discharging liquid therefrom through the outlet passage when the plunger is depressed and sucking liquid thereto through the inlet opening when the plunger is raised, f) urging means for returning the plunger to the-raised position, g) a sealing disc fixedly mounted, between the pump chamber and the mounting cup and having its inner radial edge in sealing contact with the upper portion of the plunger when said plunger is in said raised position, h) a passage extending, when the assembly is secured to the container, from the interior of the container at least partially across one of the surfaces of the sealing disc, one of the upper flange of the plunger and the piston pressing the sealing disc against the interior surface of the mounting cup preventing communication between the air gap and the vent passage, when the plunger is in the raised position, and, means for opening a gap between said plunger and said sealing disc, when the plunger is depressed, so that, when the assembly is secured to the container, the atmosphere is allowed to enter the container through the gap and the vent passage.

Λ pump assembly as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the sealing disc has its inner peripheral edge in sliding frictional contact with the plunger, downward motion of the plunger causing distortion of the sealing disc thereby placing the passage in fluid communication with the gap. k , A pump assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the passage comprises a channel between the exterior of the pump body and the container extending from the interior thereof over the upper surface of the sealing disc to a point spaced radially from the inner peripheral edge of the mounting cup, the sealing disc being urged upwardly; against the mounting cup by the plunger portion in a region between the channel and the gap to prevent fluid communication therebetween when the. plunger is in the raised position, and wherein the sealing disc has its inner peripheral edge in sliding frictional contact with the plunger, downward motion of the plunger deflecting the adjacent portion of the sealing disc downwardly to break the seal, thereby placing the channel in communication with the gap. 5. A pump assembly as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3 wherein the passage comprises a channel through the pump body and extending across the lower surface of the sealing disc and wherein the sealing disc has its inner peripheral edge closely spaced from the plunger to provide a continuation of the gap, the plunger portion being a flange contacting the lower surface of the sealing disc to make the seal which prevents fluid communication between the gap and the channel when the plunger is in the raised position, 6. A pump assembly as claimed in claim k, wherein the exterior of the pump body is formed with a plurality of knurls 44259/2 · ' > to define therebetween a plurality of passageways at least one of which forms a portion of the channel between the interior of the container and atmosphere, 7. Λ pump assembly as claimed in claim t further comprising a flange adaptor having an interior surface and a central opening and surrounding and supporting the pump body within the mounting cup for securing the pump body to the container, the adjacent interior surface of the flange adaptor and the exterior surface of the pump body cooperating to form a portion of the channel between the interior of the container and atmosphere. 8. A pump assembly as claimed in claim 7» wherein at least one of the adjacent cooperating surfaces is formed with a plurality of knurls spaced circumfereniially therearound, the other cooperating surface and the spaces between the knurls defining a plurality of passageways at least one of which forms a portion of the channel between the interior of the container and atmosphere. 9. A pump assembly as claimed in claim 8, wherein there is a tight frictional contact between a portion of the outside surface of the knurls and the other cooperating surface and wherein, the other of the contiguous cooperating surfaces which do not have knurls are of such inner and outer diameters as to provide a loose fit and circumferential clearance therebetween for the passage of air and form a portion of the channel, 10. A pump assembly as claimed in claim 8, wherein the knurls are formed on the interior surface of the flange adaptor. 11. A pump assembly as claimed in claim 8, wherein the 4425.9/2 12. A pump assembly as claimed in claim 8, further comprising an annular passage connecting the channel with the plurality of passageways to ensure that air is' admitted to all of the passageways during venting of the container, 13. A pximp assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the plunger extends outwardly of the central housing and has a tapering exterior surface, the sealing disc has its inner peripheral edge in sliding, sealing', frictional contact with the tapered plunger surface when the plunger is in the fully extended position, downward motion of the plunger breaking both the seal on the exterior surface of the plunger and the seal on the underside of the overlying container portion, thereby placing the passage in communication with the gap. 1

A pump assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprisin a) a plunger head fixedly mounted on the upper end of the plunger, b) a cap mounted on the plunger head for axial telescoping motion relative thereto, c) spring means connected between the cap and the plunger head for urging the cap upwardly, and d) releasable detent means contacting the plunger head for preventing downward motion thereof relative to the container, portions of the cap contacting the detent means for release thereof from the plunger head to free the plunger for downward motion after a predetermined extent of downward motion of the cap relative to the plunger head. 1
5. A pump assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein a portion of the channel is a groove formed on the underside of the 44259/2 1

A pump assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the piston comprise:-;: a) longitudinally extending upper and lover flange portions of a first predetermined outer diameter, b) one of the flange, portions having a wider portion of a second predetermined outer diameter which provides the sealing contact with the wall of the pump chamber, c) the internal diameter of the pump chamber being intermediate the first and second predetermined diameters such that during operation the upper and lower pisto: flanges assist in guiding the piston within but, except for the wider portion, normally do not contact the inner piston wall. 1

A pump assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a) the valve member is the lower end of the plunger and has a tapered or grooved surface configuration over a portion of its axial length, b) the outlet passage is an axial opening in the upper end of the plunger and the lower end of the outlet passage is a radial discharge port, c) the axial movement of the piston is restricted by upper and lower flange portions on the plunger which respectively engage upper and lower surface portions of the piston, and d) the fluid communication between the outlet passage and the chamber below the piston is prevented by a surface portion of the piston being in sliding sealing contact with' a surface portion of the plunger which portions cooperate to sealingly block the radial discharge port. 44259/2 1
8. Λ· pump assembly, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. 1
9. A method of operating a pump assembly for dispensing a liquid from and admitting air to a sealed container comprising the steps of a) operating a positive seal valve member to terminate fluid flow through an inlet opening in the pump chamber, b) opening a discharge port beneath a piston in a pump chamber, ¾ c) sliding a plunger through a sealing disc interposed between the container and the pump chamber to admit air to the interior of the container through a vent passage formed between cooperating surfaces of the plunger, the sealing disc, th pump chamber and the container. 20. A method as claimed in claim 19, further comprising the steps of a) discharging liquid from the pump chamber by continuing to depress the plunger, b) releasing the plunger to permit an urging means to commence raising the plunger, c) blocking the radial discharge port by moving the radial discharge port sealingly behind a piston surface out of communication with the pump chamber and thereby creating a suction in the pump chamber, d) operating a valve member to permit fluid flow from the container into the pump chamber through the inlet opening thereof upon continued upward movement of the plunger, and e) preventing communication between atmosphere 44259/2 Γ 21. Λ method as claimed in claim 20, wherein the step of admitting air includes: a) distorting inwardly a disc having its radial edge in sliding contact with the periphery of the plunger to admit air to the interior of the container through a vent passage formed between the exterior surfaces of the plunger, sealing disc and pump chamber on the one hand and the cooperating interior surfaces of the container on the other hand. 22. A method as claimed in claim 21, wherein the step of admitting air through a vent passage further includes admitting air around the entire circumference of the pump chamber by conducting the air through a plurality of passageways formed between a plurality .of knurls formed on at least one of the cooperating surfaces which form the vent passage. 23. A method as claimed in claim 22, further comprising the step of surrounding and supporting the pump chamber within a flange adaptor adapted for mounting to the container and wherein the step of admitting air through a vent passage includes directing the air past interior surfaces of the flange adaptor which form a portion of the cooperating surfaces forming the vent passage. 24. A process as. claimed in claim 23, further comprising the step of sealing the inner radial edge of the sealing disc on the periphery of the plunger when the plunger roaches the fully extended position.
