Claims (16)
1. A fan assembly comprising a first fan member having an intended axis of rotation and including a first plurality of angularly spaced vanes each extending radially outwardly of said first member rotational axis and having a radially extending edge, a second fan member having an intended axis of rotation and including a second plurality of vanes corresponding in n umber and angular spacing to said vanes of said first member, each of said second member vanes extending radially outwardly of said second member rotational axis and having a radially extending edge and an outer part extending arcuately in a plane extending parallel to said second member rotational axis and perpendicularly to a plane extending radially from and containing said second member rotational axis, and interfitting means on said first and second fan members for coaxially aligning said first and second fan members with said edges of said vanes of said, first fan member in alignment with said edges of said vanes of said second fan member and for rotatably driving one of said first and second fan members in response to rotation of the other of said first and second fan members . 43539/3

A fan assembly in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said interfitting means comprises a circumferential flange extending radially outwardly from the radially outer ends of said vane portions of said second fan member, said flange having a surface adjacent to said first fan member with a pluralit of radially extending recesses therein, and wherein said interfitting means further comprises a plurality of radially outer parts of ^ said first member vane outer edges received in said plurality of, recesses in said second fan member flange.

A fan assembly in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said first fan member includes a base from which said plurality of angularly spaced vanes extend axially, wherein each of said edges of said vanes of said first fan member is spaced axially outwardly from said base and includes a radially outer end portion, wherein said .second member includes a circular portion having an axially inner end and an axially outer end, wherein said second member further includes a circumferential flange extending radially outwardly from said axially inner end of said circular portion, wherein said second plurality of vanes extend radially inwardly from said circular portion toward said second member rotational axis, and wherein said interfitting means locates said second fan member flange in overlying relation to said radially outer end portions of said axially inner vane edges of said first fan member, whereby to form a fan assembly inlet at the axially outer end of said second fan member circular ortion and to form a fan assembly outlet at the 43539/ 3

A fan assembly in accordance with Claim 3 whorcin said second fan member flange includes a surface adjacent said first fan member and wherein said interfitting means comprises a plurality of radially extending recesses in said flange surface, and a plurality of parts of said radially outer end portions of said first member vane axially inner edges received in said plurality of recesses in said second fan member flange surface.
5.¾ A fan assembly in accordance with Claim 1 and further including an internal combustion engine comprising an engine block, a shaft journaled in said block and having a portion extending exteriorly of said block, said shaft portion receiving said first and second fan members, means on said shaft for retaining said first and second fan members in interfltted condition, and means on said shaft and on said other of said first and second fan members for rotatably driving* . said other of said first and second fan members.
6. jA fan assembly -An accordance I with Claim 5 wherein said interfitting means comprises circumferential flange extending radially outwardly from the radially outer ends of said vane portions of said second fan member, said- flange having a surface adjacent to said first fan member with a plurality of radially extending recesses therein, and wherein said interfitting means further comprises a plurality of radially outer parts of said first member vane outer edges received in 43539/3
7. i A fan assembly in accordance with Claim 5 wherein said retaining means on said shaft includes a shoulder on said shaft portion axially inwardly of said first fan member, a threaded part on the end of said shaft portion, and a nut on. said threaded part axially outwardly of said second fan member.

A fan assembly in accordance with Claim 1 ί and further including an internal combustion engine comprising an engine block., a shaft journaled in said block and having a portion extending exteriorly of said block, said shaft portion receiving said first and second fan members, and wherein said first fan member includes a base from which said plurality of angularly spaced vanes extend axially of said, shaft wherein each of edges of said vanes of said first fan member is spaced axially inwardly from said base and includes a radially outer end portion, wherein said second fan member includes a circular portion having an axially inner end and an axially outer end, wherein said second fan member further includes a circumferential flange extending radially outwardly from said axially inner end of said circular portion, and wherein said second plurality of vanes extend radially inwardly from said circular portion toward the axis of said shaft, and further including means on said shaft for retaining said first and second fan members in interfitted condition, ..and means on said shaft and on said other of said first and second fan members for rotatably driving 43539/3
9. i A fan assembly' in accordance with Claim 8 wherein said second fan member flange includes a surface adjacent said first fan member and wherein said interfitting means comprises a plurality of radially extending recesses in said flange surface, and a plurality of parts of said radially outer end portions of said first member vane axially inner edges received in said plurality of recesses in said first fan member flange surface.
10. A method of manufacturing a fan assembly according to Claim 1 and comprising the steps of die casting a first fan member with the flange and with a plurality of angularly spaced vane portions projecting from one surface of the flange, die casting a second fan member with a second plurality of vane portions corresponding in number and angular spacing to the vane portions of the first fan member, each of the second member vane portions including the vane outer parts , aligning the first and second fan members to locate the vane portions in alignment, and assembling the first and second fan members with the vane portions in alignment and so thereafter to maintain the vane portions in alignment.

A method in accordance with Claim 10 ' wherein the outer parts of the vanes of the fan assembly have an axially outer margin and wherein said step of die casting said first fan member utilizes a parting line extending along said one surface of said flange and wherein said step of die casting said second . fan member utilizes a parting line extending along the axially outer margin of said vane outer parts.
12. A method of manufacturing a fan assembly in accordance with Claim 10 wherein said step of die casting the first fan member includes casting of said plurality of angularly spaced vane portions so as to project radially outwardly of the intended rotational axis.
13. A method of manufacturing a fan assembly in accordance with Claim 10 wherein the fan assembly includes spaced walls defining a radially open circumferentially extending air outlet and an axially open air inlet,. and the plurality of angularly spaced vanes extend between the walls, wherein said step of die casting the first fan member ■ includes die casting of the vane portions thereof with radially outer parts, wherein said step of die casting the second fan member includes die casting thereof with a cylindrical portion defining, at one end thereof, the axially open air inlet, and with the second plurality of vane portions extending radially inwardly from the cylindrical portion, and with a flange extending radially outwardly from the other end of the cylindrical portion, and wherein said assembling step includes locating the second member flange in adjacent relation to the radially outer parts
14. , A method in accordance with Claim 13 wherein the step of die casting a first fan member includes casting thereof with a hub extending from the flange and from the radially inner ends of the vane portions and wherein the step of die casting a second fan member includes casting thereof with a hub extending from the radially inner ends of the vane portions of the second fan member, and wherein the step of assembling the first and second fan members includes assembling thereof with the hubs of the first and second fan members in alignment.
15. A method of manufacturing a fan assembly in accordance with Claim 10 wherein the fan assembly includes a base from which the plurality of angularly spaced vanes extend, wherein said step of die casting the first fan member includes die casting thereof with the base and with the plurality of angularly spaced vane portions each projecting from one surface of the base and with the vane portions each having a radially extending axially inner edge spaced from the base and including a radially outer end portion and wherein the step of die casting the second fan member includes die casting thereof with a circular portion having an axially inner end and an axially outer end, with a circumferential flange extending radially outwardly from the axially inner end of the circular · portion, and with the second plurality of vane portions

A met according to Clai a first fan membe ward relation to the intended rotational axis, and with a plurality of angularly spaced vane portions projecting from the flange in radially outwardly extending relation from the intended rotational axis and having radially outer parts, die casting a second fan member with a cylindrical portion defining, at one end thereof, the axially open air inlet, and with a second plurality of vane porLions extending radially inwardly from the cylindrical portion and corresponding in number and angular spacing to the vane portions of the first far. member, and with .a flange extending radially outwardly from the other end of the cylindrical portion, aligning the first and second fan members to locate the vane 'portions in alignment, and assembling the first and second fan members with the vane portions in alignment and with, the second member flange extending in adjacent relation to the radially outer parts of the vane portions of the first member so as to define with the first member flange the circumferentially extending air outlet and so as, thereafter, to maintain the vane portions
