Claims (7)

Appln. No. 43399/2 9 WHAT WE CLAIM IS 1"" ll-ir " **
1. Sliver feeding means for a high pile fabric kn tting machine having a rotatable needle cylinder with a complement of needles and a ring gear rotatable therewith, including a doffer, a main cylinder, a pair of sliver feed rolls and drive means for driving the doffer and cylinder from the ring gear at selected constant speeds of rotation, comprising a separate drive system for the sliver feed rolls, said separate drive system being driven from the ring gear and including fabric density control means interposed between the ring gear and the feed rolls to vary selectively the rate of rotation of the . feed rolls, to vary selectively from a sliver roving the rate of delivery of sliver fibers to the needles, said fabric density control means including a group of individual gears of varying size, drive means for connecting one of the group of gears to the feed rolls, to drive the feed rolls rotatably, said drive means including a gear selector engageable selectively with one gear of the group of gears for imparting a selected speed of rotation to the feed rolls, I. .
2. Sliver feeding means as claimed in Claim 1, including sliver feeding control means for controlling selectively the length of time for v/hich the feed rolls rotate said sliver feeding control means including a drive transmission means engagable with the feed rolls and control means for engaging the drive transmission means selectively with the feed rolls for selected intervals of time
3. Sliver feeding means as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, in which the main cylinder and the sliver feed rolls each ace provided with a wire covering, and the wire coverings of the feed rolls mesh with each other and with the wire covering of the main cylinder, to impart a shredding action to the sliver as it passes from the feed rolls to the main cylinder.
4. Sliver feeding means according to Claim 2 including a clutch for the Appln. No. 43399/2 feed rolls and pattern means for controlling the clutch to impart rotation selectively to the feed rolls,
5. Sliver feeding means as claimed in Claim 4, in which the clutch is an electric clutch and the pattern means includes a rotatable drum disposed adjacent the needle cylinder and having a complement of jacks and a micro- switch disposed adjacent the drum and controlled by the jacks, and connecte ^ electrically to the clutch to impart electrical impulses thereto, to cause the clutch to engage with the sliver feed rolls.
6. ' Sliver feeding means as Claimed in Claim 5, including needle 'selecting means disposed between the drum and the needles of the knitting machine.
7. Sliver high pile fabric knitting machine having a rotatable cylinde with a complement of needles a ring gear rotatable therewith, a plurality o sliver feeding devices for feeding rovings of sliver fibers to the needles, each said sliver feeding device including a doffer and a pair of rotatable Sliver feed rolls, and drive means interposed between the ring gear and the feed rolls and doffer of eac sliver feeding device, and individual control means for each sliver feeding device comprising fabric density control mean to vary selectively the rate of rotation of the sliver feed rolls, to vary rate of delivery of the sliver fibers to the needles, sliver feeding control means for controlling selectively the time of rotation of the sliver feed, rolls and in which said sliver feeding control means includes a drive transmission means/ $¾a?eed rolls and control means for engaging the drive transmission means selectively with the feed rolls to dri the feed rolls for selected intervals of time.
