Abstract
1443193 Two part coupling BUNKER RAMO CORP 19 Sept 1973 [27 Sept 1972] 43990/73 Heading H2E Multicontact connector 10 with individually releasable contacts and with anti-tracking properties, shown mated, comprises left hand receptacle 12 with male contacts 77 and right hand plug 14 with female contacts 66. Contacts in each part are retained in one-piece plastics inserts 42 and 46 inside rings 16 and 22. Ring 16 fits over ring 22, locked and pulled against gasket 39 by locking ring 30, with bayonet slots 36 engaging pins 38. Contact retention is similar in plug and receptacle: in the plug, female contacts 66 inserted from rear (right) enter holes 92 until collar 83 abuts on shoulder 95. Inward facing integral slotted fines 98 latch contacts against removal except by means of a special tool (not shown), while thinned integral wall sections prevent tracking between contacts. Wires 68 are crimped in contact tails 84 before insertion. Gasket 53 with conical portions round receptacle pins 77, engaging conical depressions round socket mouths on plug insert 46, maintains protection when engaged. Gaskets 60 and 71 in plug and similar in receptacle seal wiring tails. Inserts 42 and 46 are fitted into shell rings 16 and 22 from the rear of each until abutting shoulders engage, and outward latching skirts as 72 prevent withdrawal. Formation of contact-retaining tins 98 by means of expandible core pins in the moulding process is illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown).

Claims (7)
1. An electrical connector Including: a plurality of parallel conductive contacts, each of said contacts having a terminal portion, a body portion and an enlarged shoulder Inter-posed therebetween; contact Insulating means Including an Insulating Insert molded In one-piece with front and rear ends, a plurality of contact-recei ing longitudinal ly-extending † >Jes therebetween and ^ integrally formed on said insulating insert , having contact retention means^ said holes Including enlarged ' longitudinally elongated cavities laterally spaced-apart and front-wardly and rearwardly disposed therefrom cavity portions of reduced size; said contact retention means In each of said holes Including an Inner rearwardly directed, raised surface disposed In one of said enlarged cavities for engagement with said contact shoulder, rearwardly spaced-apart therefrom a slotted, outwardly yleldable riser havi g a mounting portion and a straight engagement portion tapering Inwardly therefrom in a frontward I y direction for engagement for said contact shoulder; and i terposed between said surface and said mounting portion, a wall section Integrally formed in said Insert and perlpher- I lcally extending around said enlarged cavity, said front cavity Including an opening for receiving entry of a mating contact with a uniform perimeter and sized substantially smaller than said enlarged cavity.

The combination as claimed in Claim I, wherein said wall section is of thlnwall construction between and separating adjacent members of said enlarged cavities, said wall section being Imperforate between said adjacent cavities to provide an effective seal around and between the Individual contacts. ,
3. The combination as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said riser is slotted and outwardly expandable.
4. The combination as claimed In Claim 3, wherein said mounting portions of said risers In said adjacent members of said enlarged cavities are oppositely disposed and laterally adjacent on said wal I section.
5. The combination as claimed in Claim 4, wherein said wall section Is essentially of a constant Inner diameter and Interconnects said engagement surface and said mounting portion of said riser.
6. The combination as claimed in Claim 5, wherein said engagement portion tapers away from said wall section to form therebetween a recess having a longitudinally-elongated cross-section, said recess and enlarged cavity being molded with a non -retractable core pin.
7. The combination as claimed In Claim 6, wherein said engagement surface is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of said wall section. For the/ applicants PART
