Abstract
1436217 Seaming non-metallic sheet material V FLAX 3 Aug 1973 [3 Aug 1972] 36993/73 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] In the manufacture of a flexible tubular container, an end piece 2 is friction welded to a flexible tubular body 1 by disposing the endpiece 2 with a peripheral region thereof within a marginal edge portion 20 of the body 1 and rotating the body 1 and the endpiece 2 relative to one another while the endpiece peripheral region is radially outwardly deformed into frictional engagement with the body marginal edge portion, there being no rubbing movement between the endpiece 2 and apparatus for effecting the friction welding. The apparatus comprises a pressure tool 4, Fig. 4, rotatable in a housing 5 by a shaft 6 and a ball-race 7. A resilient member 8 thrusts the tool 4 against the endpiece 2 resting on an an abutment tool 9 rotatable on a fixed mandrel 10. The tool 9 is positioned inside the body 1 which is fitted into an external sleeve 11. In use, the tool 9 presses on the inside of the endpiece 2 thus increasing its initial diameter. The housing 5 is provided with an inlet 13 and an outlet 14 for compressed air to lubricate the tool 4, a circular relief 15 being provided for this purpose. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the body is fitted over a fixed mandrel 16. Three constructions of container are illustrated, Figs. 1-3 (all not shown).

Claims (2)
1. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A method of friction-welding an endpiece to a flexible tubular body in the manufacture of a tubular container, which comprises disposing the endpiece and the body in a desired predetermined relation with a peripheral region of the endpiece received within a portion of the body including a free edge thereof, and rotating the body and endpiece in relation to one another while the said peripheral region of the endpiece is radially outwardly deformed into frictional engagement with the body edge portion by axial forces applied to the endpiece by relatively axially moveable first and second' tool members which are respectively disposed outside the endpiece and within the body and are non-rotating in relation to one another and to the endpiece, the body edge portion being at the same time outwardly restrained by a further tool member sleeved over at least part of the body and non-rotating in relation to the body, the relative rotation of the body and endpiece frictionally generating heat sufficient to weld the endpiece and body together at their peripheral region and edge portion respectively.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the relative rotation of the body and endpiece is effected by rotatably driving the said first tool member and restraining the said further tool member against rotation, the said second tool member being freely rotatable and frictionally driven by the first member through the endpiece. A container having a tubular body and an endpiece friction-welded together by a method as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2. A container according to claim 3, wherein the inner surface of the peripheral region of the endpiece is inclined to the axis of the endpiece. A container as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4, wherein the outside surface of the peripheral region of the endpiece stands proud of the said free edge of the body at the interface between the endpiece and body. Apparatus for friction-welding an endpiece peripherally to a portion including a free edge of a flexible tubular body in the manufacture of a tubular container, which comprises first and second tool members arranged for relative axial movement towards one another whereby respectively to e"hgage outside and inside surfaces of a said endpiece disposed between them and by applying axially directed forces to the endpiece to radially outwardly deform a peripheral region of the same, a further tool member arranged for sleeved engagement over at least the said edge portion of the body whereby when the endpiece is located on the body with its peripheral region in engagement with the bore of the edge portion to provide outward restraint against deformation of the edge portion in response to the said compressive forces applied to the endpiece by the first and second tool members, and drive means for causing relative rotation of the first and second tool members on the one hand and the further tool member on the other hand whereby by causing a corresponding relative rotation of the endpiece and body to frictionally generate heat sufficient to weld the endpiece and body together at their peripheral region and edge portion respectively. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the drive means comprises a shaft attached to the first tool member which is rotatable within a non-rotatable housing, the second tool member is freely rotatable and arranged to be frictionally driven by the first member through the agency of the endpiece, and the further tool member is non-rotatable. Apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the housing is arranged for sleeved engagement over the edge portion of the body as the said further tool member. Apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the housing is adapted to extend only part way along the body and there is provided a non-rotatable mandrel arranged to provide internal restraint for the body over the remainder of its length, the second tool member being rotatably mounted on the mandrel at the free end of the same. 4283.5 Apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the further tool member comprises a tubular sleeve arranged to provide external restraint for the body over the whole of the body length. Apparatus according to any claim of claims 7 to 10, wherein the housing is provided with an inlet and an outlet for compressed air to lubricate the first tool member . Apparatus according to any claim of claims 7 to 11, wherein the second tool member is fixed in axial position and the first tool member and housing are axially movable towards and away therefrom. Apparatus as claimed in any claim of claims 7 to 12, wherein the first tool member is resiliently biassed away from the housing and towards the second tool member. A flexible tubular container made by a method as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 and substantially as herein described with reference to Figs. 1, 2 or 3 of the accompanying drawings. A method of manufacturing a flexible tubular container, comprising a friction-welding operation performed substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. Apparatus for performing a friction-welding operation in the manufacture of the flexible tubular container, 42835 substantially as herein described with reference to Fig. 4 or Fig. 5 of the accompanying drawings.
