Description

IMPROVED BEAKES TESTING- DEVICE The present invention concerns an improved brak» testing device of the kind comprising a grooved driving roller and parallel thereto but spaced therefrom a grooved driven roller on which wheels of a vehicle to be tested are to be disposed, This device will hereinafter be called " a brake testing device of the kind defined" .
This device is used for testing both heavy vehicles where the rollers are turned at low speed but require a great force of turning and for light vehicles where the rollers are turned at higher speed but with less power.
A single motor which can be driven with two different speeds has been used therefor up to now.
There are many drawbacks in this known device. A variable speed motor or a double speed motor is very expensive, in fact is more expensive than two separate motors each corresponding to the speed reqxnired* This is due also to the fact that this variable speed motor is not o standard specification but must be manufactured according to the individual requirements.
Furthermore, when using one double speed motor for both light and heavy vehicles, the same energy ovitput is spent for both vehicles, so that for testing the light vehicle power output is wasted.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome the a.m. disadvantages* The invention consists in a brake testing device of the kind defined wherein one small motor destined for testing light vehicles and one large motor destined fo testing heavB vehicles are provided, the shaft of the driven roller being connected by gear nd coupling means to the shaft of the large motor, the small motor also being coupled to the shaf of the large motor so that s aid lar e motor shaft can be alternatingly rotated by the small being motor or by the rotor of the large motor lever means /bonneoted to the housing of the large motor and being adapted to transfer the torque of that housing to an indicating dial when a braking force is applied by the wheels of the vehicle to be tested on the roller.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings which show in Fig- 1 a schematic plan view of a brake tester for vehicles according to the invention} Fig* 2 shows a schematic front elevation of the indicator dial and its operating means* The brake tester according to the invention comprises two parallel groove rollers 1 and 2 which are connected for operation by means of a chain 3 as known per se roller 2 being the driving roller.
According to the invention a small horse-power motor 4 is provided with a pulley 5 and connected by means of a V-belt to a pulley 7 rotating on a shaft 8· Said shaft which is also adapted to be actuated by a rotor 9, is part of a motor which is of larger horse power than motor 4 and is generally indicated at 10· This motor also includes a gear The shaft 8 is adapted by means of gear unit 11T ^ to connect with the co-axial shaft 8a which by means of a coupling 14 is connected to the driving roller 2.
The end of a lever 1 3 is operatively connected to a balancing and movement transfer system 1 5 which actuates a pointer 16 mounted in a center of a scale 1 7 as shown in Fig. 2, The device works as follows: Mhen a light vehicle is to be tested motor 2 is electrically actuated rotating pulley 5 and thus S—belt 6 which causes the rotation of shaft 8 through the intermediary of pulley 7» the gear system 11 causing the rotation of roller 2 through the intermediary of coupling 14· Roller 1 will rotate at the same speed owing to tSie transmission of the rotation by way of chain 3« When the brakes are applied on the wheels of a vehicle located on rollers 1 and 2 , the housing 12 of the motor gear unit 10 will tend to deviate about its axis owing to the torque whereby lever 1 3 is moved causing the balancing system 15 to be moved correspondingly so that the pointer 16. will indicate on scale 1 7 the value of the braking force required to stop the rollers. ¾hen a heavy vehicle is to be tested the motor gear unit 10 is electrically actuated so that rotor 9 drives shaft 8 directly. Motor 4 which is not electrically actuated will idle owing to the transmission of the rotation by means of belt 6. The speed of rotation of the motor gear unit is transmitted to roller 2, by means of gear system 11, shaft 8a and coupling 14, the braking force required to stop rollers 1 and 2 being indicated on scale 17 in a manner
