Abstract
1379859 Reduction of zearalenone COMMERCIAL SOLVENTS CORP 2 July 1973 [26 Sept 1972] 31490/73 Heading C2C Zearalenone of formula is converted to a mixture of a major amout of the high boiling-point diastereoisomer and a minor amount of the low boiling-point diastereoisomer of zearalanol of formula by catalytically reducing zearalenone with hydrogen in the presence of a solvent and from 0À001 to 5% (vol.), based on the solvent of a weak acid and a platinum catalyst, said acid having an ionization constant for one hydrogen of from 1 Î 10<SP>-4</SP> to 5 Î 10<SP>-1</SP> in aqueous solution and said acid not being itself reduced to a weaker acid under the reaction conditions. Suitable weak acids are, for example, tartaric acid, phosphoric acid, oxalic acid and citric acid.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the lower alkanol contains from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and the, solvent contains from about 0.001 to 5 volume percent (based on the solvent) of the weak acid.
5. The method of claim 2 wherein the catalytic reaction is carried out with reducing conditions including temperatures from about 20 to 60 °C and a hydrogen pressure from about 25 to 100 psi. 42623/3
6. The method of claim 3 wherein the solvent contains weak acid in an amount from about 0.01 to 3 volume percent,, based on the volume of the solvent.
7. The method of claim 1 wherein the weak acid has -4 a first acid ionization constant of from about 5 x 10 to 5 x lO**1.
8. The method of claim 2 wherein the weak acid is tartaric acid.
9. The method of claim 2 wherein the weak acid is phosphoric acid.
10. Th method of claim 2 wherein the weak acid is oxalic acid.
