Claims (16)

* 42535/3 ^ί' WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A method of burning a starting material in a combustion chamber, said method comprising the steps of: a) forming a combustible cup-like container; b) positioning the starting material to be combusted in the said container; c) positioning the said container in an open ignition basket within the said combustion chamber; d) supplying gaseous oxygen to the said combustion chamber, and e) supplying heat to the said open ignition basket and the combustible cup-like container completely to burn it and the startin material contained within it.
2. The method according to claim 1 wherein access of oxygen to the burning starting material within the combustible cup-like container is progressively reduced from the top to the bottom of the ignition basket.
3. The method according to claim 1 or 2 in which the starting material contains at least one radioactive isotope.
4. The method according to claim 3 in which the starting material is a liquid.
5. The method according to claim 3 wherein the starting material contains water and a fuel-like substance is added to promote combust
6. The method according to claim 5 wherein the fuel-like substance is butanediol. 42535/3
7. The method according to any preceding claim wherein the combustible-cup-like container has an ignition promoting substance placed around the rim of the said cup-like container.
8. The method according to claim 7 in which the ignition promoting substance has an ignition-point of approximately 95°C.
9. The method according to claim 8 in which the ignition promoting substance is finely powdered phosphorous sesquisulphide (P^S^) ·
10. An apparatus for carrying out the method of claims 1 to 9 which includes the said combustion chamber, the ignition basket in said combustion chamber/ the combustible cup-like container positioned in said ignition basket and in which said combustion chamber has means for supplying and controlling the supply of gaseous oxygen to the combustion chamber.
11. The apparatus according to claim 10 in which the combustible cup like container is formed in the shape of a thimble opening upwardly into the space above the open ignition basket.
12. The apparatus according to claim 10 or 11, in which said open ignition basket is formed of a non-noble electrically resistive alloy
13. The apparatus according to claim 12 in which said non-noble electrically resistive alloy comprises wire having high electrical resistivity, said wire having coils spaced relatively widely apart at the upper end of said open ignition basket and relatively closer together towards the lower end of said open ignition basket for ensuring that access of oxygen to the starting material in said combustible cup-like container is progressively reduced from the top to the bottom of said open ignition basket.
14. The apparatus according to claim 12 wherein said alloy has the composition in the range 50-80% Ni, 10-20% (Tr, 7-27% Fe, 0-11% Cu, 0-5% Mn 0.3-4.6% Si and 1.0% Mo.
15. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the combustion chamber is generally of a shape substantially commensurate with that of the flame generated within it by the burning of the combustible cup-like container and its starting material.
16. Flame combustion apparatus constructed and arranged substantially as herein described and shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawing.
