Claims (1)

1. The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. An expansion joint for a roadway comprising: (a) an elastoineric member insertable between roadway sections spaced apart widely along the roadway, the member being elongated correspondingly; (b) a plurality of similarly elongated cavities laterally spaced in said member; and (c) for each cavity a rigid bar positioned in a corresponding one of said cavities, each extending over the greater length of the elongation of the cavity and longitudinally movable relative thereto. 2o The expansion joint according to claim 1, wherein said elastomeric member and said cavities are elongated more, along the roadway, than said member* is thick. 3. The expansion joint according to claim 1 , wherein said cavities are cylindrical. o The expansion joint according to claim 1, wherein said bars are metal and are cylindrical. 5. The expansion joint according to claim 2, wherein the length of the bars is less than the elongation of said member, along the roadway, at the maximal operational stress of compression of said member. 6. The expansion joint according to claim 2, wherein the ends of said -bars are rounded. 41857 2 7. The expansion joint according to claim 2, wherein an upper surface of said member includes a plurality of grooves transverse of the roadway. 8. The expansion joint according to claim 2, wherein lower surface of said member includes a plurality of grooves transverse of the roadway. 9. The expansion joint according to claim 1 , wherein lower surface of said member includes a plurality of grooves longitudinal of the roadway. 10. The expansion joint according to claim 2, includi a plurality of metal plates imbedded in said elastomeric member said plates including means adjacent ends of said bars, and means including said plates for anchoring said member to the roadway, 11. ^T e expansion joint according to claim 2, includi a road having a gap therein and said member being positioned ove said gap* 12. The expansion joint according to claim 11, wherei said bars are longer than the greatest width of said gap. 13. The expansion joint according to claim 12, includ ing means for connecting said member to said roadway. 4» ihe expansion joint according to claim 13, wherei said connecting means includes a pair of metal plates, one on each side of said gap, and wherein said member is laterally squeezed- in-betwe en said pair of plates. 15, The expansion joint according to claim 10, wherei 4 ϊ Β 57 2 - each of said metal plates forms a side of a caisson. 16. The expansion joint according to claim 10 , wherei each of said metal plates forms a side of a square* 17. The expansion joint according to claim 16 , wherei said anchoring means are directly attached to said metal plates. 18. The expansion joint according to claim 1 , wherein said member includes a substantially flat top surface and wherei said bars and cavities are parallel to said top surface. 1 . The expansion joint according to claim 18, wherei said cavities are longer than said bar, 20o The expansion joint according to claim 19? wherei said cavities are cylindrical. 21 . The expansion joint according to claim 20 , wherei said bars are metal and are cylindrical. 22. The expansion joint according to claim 21 , wherei the ends of said bars are rounded. 23. The expansion joint according to claim 22 , whereii a plurality of metal plates are imbedded in the two long sides of said member, said plates including means for anchoring said membe r. 24·» The expansion joint according to claim 23 , whereii an upper surface of said member includes a plurality of longitudinal grooves. 25. The expansion joint according to claim 24, where - dinal grooves. 26. The expansion joint according to claim 25, wherein a lower surface of said member includes a plurality of transverse grooves. 27. The expansion joint according to claim 26, including a road having a gap therein and said member being positioned over said gap. 28. The expansion joint according to claim 7, wherein said bars are longer than the greatest width of said gap. 29o The expansion joint according to claim 28, wherein said roadway includes a pair of metal plates, one on each side o said gap, and wherein said member is laterally squeezed in-betwee said pair of plates, and including means connecting said anchor means to said metal plates. 30„ 'The expansion joint according to claim 1, includ-ing a plurality of springs positioned in said cavities, with one spring being in contact with each end of each of said bars, for centering said bars in said cavities. 31. A method for providing a roadway surface over a ga between two adjacent roadway sections while accomodating relative movement therebetween comprising: (a) providing an elongated elastomeric member having a plurality of elongated transverse cavities therein between said sections and over said gap; (b) positioning an elongated bar in each of said cavities for movement therein relative to said member, said bars being longer than the width of said gap and extending across sai< 4 1 8 5 7 ( c) anchoring said member to said roadway sections, 32. The method according to claim 31 , including maintaining said bars centrally positioned over said gap. 33. The method according to claim 32 , wherein said maintaining comprises positioning two compression springs in each cavity , one in contact with each end of each of said bars and the other ends of said springs in contact with said roadway sections.
