Abstract

1505232 Spring units J H KARLAN 12 Jan 1976 00954/76 Heading F2S A spring unit, Fig. 1, comprises a pair of elongate resilient elements 11, 12 each of substantially sinusoidal form in longitudinal section so as to have alternate C-shaped portions, e.g. 17, 18, and rectilinear portions, e.g. 24, 25, the elements being interconnected with adjacent ends thereof spaced by members 13 such that rectilinear portions of one element are interposed between adjacent rectilinear portions of the other element, and blocks 50-58 of elastomeric foam being interposed between adjacent rectilinear portions of respective elements. In the Fig. 1 embodiment auxiliary resilient members 30-35 are provided within the concavity of the C-shaped portions, and the spacer members 13 each consist of a stack of alternate rubber and lead plates. The Fig. 1 embodiment may be modified (Figs. 11 and 12, not shown) by providing coil springs located between adjacent rectilinear portions of respective elements and embedded in the blocks of elastomeric foam. In the alternative construction of Fig. 5 the elongated elements are located in a casing 64 formed of two telescoping parts 66, 71 and filled with elastomeric foam. The foam may be a silicon foam of open-cell form and three elongate elements may be used instead of two.
