1. A compound of the formula R- H-CH-CH CH wherein R is a phenoxyacetyl, phenylacetyl, phenylthioacetyl or phenyl T-ka(- dimethylacetyl group or a phenoxyacetyl, phe y-lacetyl, thiophen¾acetyl^phenylmercaptoacetyl or phenyl-^ s[-dimethylacetyl group substituted on ring carbon atoms thereof with fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, Cj to Cg-alkyl, Cj to Cg-alkylo y, nitro^ cyano or trifluoromethyl, and is C4 to Cg-tert-alkyl, C¾ to C^-tert-alkenyl, Cg to C,-,-tert-alkynyl, benzyl, methoxybenzyl, nitrobenzyl, benz-hydryl, phenacyl, trimethylsilyl, phthalimidomethyl and succinimidomethyl.
2. A compound as defined in claim 1, wherein the compound is 4- methoxybenzyl 7-(phenoxyaeetamido)-3-bromomethyl 2 Δ -cephem-4-carboxylate.
3. A process which comprises reacting N-hromosuccinimide with a cephalosporin compound of the formula / S v R-NH-CH-CH CH ί 1 I I 0=C— . C -CH_ v or 3 I C oOOR, where R, and R^ is as defined in claim 1 in an inert, substantially anhydrous organic liquid diluent at temperatures of from about 40°C. to about 100°C. to form a compound of the formula 415&S/2 wherein R and are as defined in claim 1.
4. The process of claim 3 subs antially as herein described v/ith particular reference to the examples. 2
