1376091 Plant growth media containing crosslinked polymers UNION CARBIDE CORP 22 Dec 1972 59412/72 Heading C1B [Also in Divisions A5 and C3] Plant growth media and fertilizer compositions comprise free-flowing, water swellable, radiation cross-linked hydrophilic polymers (see Division C3) characterized by high waterretentive properties and a content of inert filler material exemplified by wood flows, wood pulp fluff, tree bark, cellulose flocs, cotton linter floes, nylon flocs, rayon flocs, perlite, diatomaceous earth, talc, clay, fly ash, magnesium silicate, silica, soil, sand, peat moss, vermiculite, gypsum, calcium carbonate, urea, tricalcium phosphate and/or dibasic calcium phosphate. Claims (41)

41174 2 WliAT IS CLAIMED IS :
1. Λ process for the preparation of a f ee-flowing, water swellable hydrophilic polymeilc material in particulate form, said process comprising the steps of: (a) blending 3. mixture of at least one water soluble pulverulent hydrophilic polymer and at least one pulverulent inert filler, a substantial portion of said filler having a particle size less than that of said polymer and present in an amount sufficient to cover a substantial portion of the surface area of said pulverulent polymer, (b) thereafter while said blending is continued, contacting said mixture under thorough agitation with a finely divided spray of water at a rate and in an amount not to exceed that at which the mixture is maintained in a freo- flowing particulate form, and (c) exposing said mixture to ionizing radiation for a period of time to · crosslink said polymer.
2. The process of claim 1 wherein said hydrophilic polymer and said inert filler are blended in step (a) in the dry state.
3. The process of claim 1 wherein said inert filler prior to contact with said hydrophilic polymer in step (a) is blended with a portion of said water in an amount not to exceed that at which the filler is maintained in a free-flowing particulate form.
4. The process of claim 1 wherein the mixture is dried after ste (c) to remove at least some of said water.
5. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is poly(alkylene oxide).
6. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is poly(ethylene oxide).
7. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is a polyacrylamide .
8. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide.
9. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is polyvinyl alcohol.
10. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is hydroxyethyl cellulose.
11. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is an ammonium polyacrylate .
12. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is polymerized hydroxyalkyl acrylate.
13. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is polymerized hydroxyalkyl me hacrylate.
14. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polymerized hydroxyalkoxyalkyl acrylates and alkoxyalkyl acrylates.
15. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polymerized hydroxyalkoxyalkyl meth-acrylates and alkoxyalkyl methacrylates .
16. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is a polymerized alkylene oxide or poly(alkylene oxide) adduct of acrylate and methacrylate es ers .
17. The process of claim 1 wherein the inert filler is pulverulent wood.
18. . The process of claim 1 wherein the inert filler is pulverulent diatomaceous earth.
19. The process of claim 1. wherein the inert filler is cellulose floe.
20. The process of claim I wherein Lhe inert: filler is cotton 1 inter floe.
21. Th process of claim 1 wherein the inert filler is coal dust.
22. Tie process of claim 1 wherein the inert filler is clay.
23. The process of claim 1 wherein the inert filler is a fertilizer.
24. The process of claim 1 wherein the inert filler is a magnesium silicate.
25. The process of claim 1 wherein reagent grade or technical grade tricalcium phosphate is substituted for at least about 0.5 weight per cent of said filler.
26. A plant growth medium comprising at least one member selected from Che group consisting of soil, sand, peat moss and vermiculite, in admixture material with the hydrophilic polymeric/prepared by the process of claim 1.
27. The plant growth medium of claim 26 injsaid polymeric material wherein the hydrophilic poXylfier l is poly (alkylene oxide).
28. The plant growth madium of claim 26 . in said pol^jeric material wherein the hydrophilic polymer^ s poly(ethylene oxide).
29. The plant growth medium of claim 26 wherein the inert medium is pulverulent wood.
30. The plant growth medium of claim 26 which contains at least one fertilizer.
31. The plant growth medium of claim 26 which contains at least one herbicide,
32. The plant growth medium of claim 26 which contains at least one fungicide.
33. The plant growth medium of claim 26 which contains at least one nematocide.
34. The plant growth medium of claim 26 which contains at least one insecticide.
35. A method for rendering plants resistant to moisture stress which comprises growing said plants in the plant growth medium of claim 26.
36. The method of claim 35 wherein the hydrophilic polymer is poly(ethylene oxide).
37. A disposable absorbent article containing the mixture prepared by the process of claim 1.
38. The disposable absorbent article of claim 37 which is a catamenial device.
39. The disposable absorbent article of claim 37 which is a sanitary napkin.
40. The disposable absorbent article of claim 37 which is a tampon.
41. The disposable absorbent article of claim 37 which is a diaper.
