Claims (17)

1. A process of treating agricultural seed with at least one chemical by bringing together in a hollow vessel the seed and the chemical or chemicals and causing relative movement between them characterised in that the seed and the chemical or chemicals maintained in motion by imparting to them a rapid rotation about a substantially vertical axis so that, under the influence of centrifugal force the mixture of seed and chemical flows outwardly and upwardly and by returning the mixture inwardly and downwardly above the outwardly flowing' stream so that the mass of the mixture assumes a toroidal form with individual particles in the mixture travelling helically around the toroid.
2. A process as claimed in Claim 1 wherein predetermined quantities of the seed and the chemical or chemicals are separately metered into the hollow vessel.
3. A process as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the treated seed is discharged from the hollow vessel by centrifugal force.
4. A process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the seed and/or the chemical or chemicals are metered into the hollcw vessel continuously.
5. A process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the seed and/or the chemical or chemicals are metered in to the hollow vessel in batches.
6. A process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 5 wherein the mixture of seed and chemical or chemicals is caused to rotate about a substantially vertical axis by the -liw rotation of a circular platform comprised by the hollow vessel.
7. A process as claimed in Claim 6 wherein the platform .is dished to constitute a bowl with its marginal portion sloping outwardly and upwardly.
8. A process as' claimed in Claim 6 or Claim 7 wherein the platform rotates with a peripheral speed within the range 30 to 1500 metres per minute.
9. A process as claimed in Claim 6 or Claim 7 wherein the platform rotates with a peripheral speed within the range 150 to 600 metres per minute.
10. A process as claimed in Claim 6 or Claim 7 wherein the platform rotates with a peripheral speed within the range 240 to 480 metres per minute.
11. A process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 11 wherein the seed is cereal seed.
12. A process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 11 wherein the seed is cotton seed.
13. A process as claimed in any .of Claims 1 to 12 wherein the chemical or chemicals are metered into the hollow vessel in the form of a powder composition.
14. A process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 12 wherein the chemical or chemicals are metered into the hollow vessel in the form of a slurry composition.
15. A process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 11 wherein the chemicals are metered into the hollow vessel in the form of a liquid composition.
16. A process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 15 wherein the chemical used or one of the chemicals used is a fungicide. 17. A process as claimed in Claim 15 wherein the fungicide is 5-n-butyl-2-ethylamino-4- methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine . 18. A process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 1 wherein the chemical used or one of the chemicals used is an insecticide. 19. A process as claimed in Claim 18 wherein the insecticide is 0,0-diethyl 0-2-diethylamino-'- methylpyrimidin-6-yl phosphorothionate . 20. A process as claimed in Claim l8 wherein the insecticidesis 3,5 jS-trimethylthiazolidin-*!- ■on-2-ylideneamino N-methylcarbamate . 21. A process of pelleting agricultural seed wherein the process of any of Claims 1 to 10 is used and the chemical is metered into the hollow vessel in the form of a slurry and the liquid slurry diluent is evaporated whilst the mixture of seed and chemical is being rotated. 22. A process as claimed in Claim 21 wherein the liquid slurry diluent is evaporated by blowing air through the mixture . 23. A process as claimed in Claim 6 wherein the wall of the hollow vessel is adapted to provide an outwardly and upwardly sloping portion adjacent to the edge of the platform. 24. Apparatus for treating agricultural seed with chemicals which comprises a hollow vessel having means for delivering thereinto seed and seed treating chemical or chemicals and means for removing therefrom the treated seed, the vessel comprising a circular platform dished to constitute a bowl with its marginal portion sloping outwardly and upwardly, the platform being rotatable about a substantially vertical axis and closely surrounded by the wall of the vessel, and means fo'r rotating the platform. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 24 wherein the means for delivering seed into the hollow vessel comprises a batch weigher. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 24 or Claim 25 wherein the means for delivering the seed into the hollow vessel comprises a conveyer. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 24 to 26 wherein the means for removing treated seed from the hollow vessel comprises a port in the wall of the vessel through which the seed may be discharged by centrifugal force. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 27 wherein the port has a door which may be opened to permit the discharge of the treated seed. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 24 to 27 wherein the wall of the hollow vessel is in the form of a right vertical cylinder. 30. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 24 to 29 wherein the internal wall of the hollow vessel comprises at least one inwardly directed vane . 31. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 24 to 29 wherein the internal wall of the hollow vessel and/or the surface of the circular platform is coated with a frictional material. 32. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 31 wherein the frictional material is a polyurethane resin. 33. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 24 to 32 wherein the circular platform has indentations and/or raised portions on its Sur ace. 34. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 33 wherein the circular platform is provided with raised radiating ribs on its surface. 35. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 24 to 34 wherein the circular platform and/or the wall ^ of the hollow vessel is provided with small holes through which air may be blown into the vessel. 36. Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 24 to 35 wherein the means to deliver seed treating chemical or chemicals therein comprises a conduit through which the chemical or chemicals are introduced into the hollow vessel. 37. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 36 wherein the end of the conduit within the hollow vessel is adjacent to a means of distributing the chemical or chemicals within the vessel. 38. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 37 wherein the means for distributing the chemical or chemicals within the vessel is a rotatable disc. 39. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 36 wherein the end of the conduit within the hollow vessel is connected to a spray head or dribble bar. 40 . Agricultural seed whenever treated with a chemical or chemicals by a process as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 2 3 · 41 . Agricultural seed whenever treated with a chemical or chemicals using apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 24 to 40. 42 . A process of treating agricultural seed with a chemical or chemicals substantially as described herein with particular reference to the description of operation of the specific embodiments. 43.
