Description

AN IMPROVED ARRANGEMENT OF IDENTIFICATION MARKINGS IN BOOKS, FOLDERS, JOURNALS AND THE LIKE FOR FINDING REQUIRED INFORMATION The present invention relates to an arrangement of identification markings for groups of information, such as the letters of an alphabet, indices of cities and villages, headings of chapters used in dictionaries, telephone directories, or any other books, folders or journals, dealing with diverse subject matters.
It is an object of the invention to provide such an arrangement of said identification markings with which information about certain of said groups may easily be found, even when the book or the like is still closed.
Various systems of arrangements of identification markings are known. For example, telephone directories show at the longitudinal edge of each page black markings which for the same locality are printed at a certain position at said longitudinal edge of th« directory, while the black marking3 of another locality (city, village) are printed at a different position. Thus, when the directory is closed, the longitudinal side of the directory shows the black markings of the various localities in staggered position distributed all over that side from the upper corner to the lower corner. While this arrangement may suffice* if only a few groups of black markings are printed, because the book is divided into a very few parts (e.g. main towns of Israel)* it is entirely unsatisfactory for finding the required information, if the markings have to indicate the letters of ah alphabet or a greater number of different groups of information.
It is for this reason that for dictionaries, handbooks and the like another arrangement has been chosen, consisting of from the individual page or the information is marked on cut-away portions of these tabs, to become visible from the outside. Or vertically aligned notches are made in the longitudinal edges of all the pages associated with one particular group of information, e.g. a letter of the alphabet in dictionaries.
All these arrangements have the drawback that for making the notches, tabs, cut-away portions' the production costs of the printed matter (book, dictionary, folder, journal) are substantially increased.
The present invention' combines the advantages of the known arrangements, that means the low cost production of printing telephone directories with black markings as described above with the easy finding of the required information as can be achieved by the costly systems of the tabs, notches and cut-away portions.
~' The invention consists in an arrangement for identification of groups of pages in printed matter such as books, journals, P · ---· ■ -- . I . . ' directories and the like, comprising the markings of the groups on the vertical side edges of the pages as known per se, combined with a vertical column of indices which corresponds in content to said groups and is printed in transverse alignment with said visible when said printed matter is either open^or^cj^jed.-^.^ In a preferred embodiment of the invention the covers of said printed matter project beyond said edges and said column is printed along the inside of the projecting space of at least one cover, or said column may be printed near the vertical edge of each page. The markings on the margin of the pages may be constituted by a printed letter, numeral or heading or may be only a field of printed colour.
On the longitudinal edge of the printed matter when closed, appears only a thin strip of printed colour, in the case where the covers of the printed matter project beyond the longitudinal edges of the pages.
Thus, a person wishing to open the dictionary at a certain letter of the alphabet, only has to put his finger on the field bearing said letter printed on the inside of the cover or along the outside margins of the pages and then pass it aoross a straight line to the longitudinal edge of the pages of the closed dictionary, until he reaches the corresponding markings thereon.
It can be readily appreciated that the system above described is based on additional printing, a process which is cheap since it can be carried out simultaneously with the printing of the pages and the lining page of the cover.
It^is^referable to^provide a column of indices along both insides of the projecting spaces of the covers or along the longitudinal margins of the back and front of each page of t e^ printed matter, so that the required information may even more easily be found when the book, folder, directory and the like is closed.
In the latter case the cover and pages of the printed matter are of substantially the same size. Each page beaisa vertically aligned column of all identification marks (e.g. the whole alphabet) spaced a little away from the side edge, the individual marking of each page which extends into the longitudinal edge of - the printed matter being arranged at the edge as in the first embodiment of this invention. In this case a person has to open the printed matter (book etc.) and must then put his finger on the dteired indication mark, bend the book slightly and pass the finger over the longitudinal edge until it rests on the corresponding coloured marking appearing there.
The invention will be illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings wherein: Fig, 1 is a perspective view of an open dictionary according to one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of an open dictionary according to the modification of the invention.
The dictionary has individual pages 1 each bearing near their lateral edge 2 a letter and a black marking 3 which extends into the longitudinal edge of the book. The inside of the cover 4 column 5 corresponds in level to the black markings on the longitu- t dinal edge of the dictionary relating to the same letter* In the embodiment of Fig. 2 each page 6 bears the same markings V as shown in Fig. 1, but in addition has printed thereon the whole alphabet 7 in vertical alignment somewhat spaced from the lateral edge*.
