Description

DEVICE TO HOLD PAGES FOR LIFTING FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention generally pertains to a system and method for grasping a printed sheet such as paper so that it may be lifted without contact between a lifting hand and the printed sheet.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Persons such as clerks often must lift many printed sheets, typically sheets of paper, in rapid succession. For example, bank clerks counting money or accountants looking through piles of invoices. The sheets can be separate (for example, money) or can be bound or clipped together (for example, invoices, checks, check stubs).
In addition, it is often desired to stamp each sheet before lifting and moving it. The stamped information can be, for example, a logo, a date, a company name, or text such as "paid" or "overdue". When sheets are to be stamped as well as moved, this requires two operations, a stamping operation with an office stamp, followed by a moving operation.
Although this is not a complex task, it can present difficulties in performing rapidly and accurately.
It is very common for the sheets to be carefully aligned or to be bound together or clipped together at one edge. In that case, to pick up a single sheet can involve inserting a finger or fingernail between a corner of one sheet and the corner of the next lower sheet, which can result in picking up two or more sheets at once.
Sheets can cling to each other, so that rubbing a top sheet sideways does not result in movement of the top sheet relative to a next sheet or, again, results in movement of two sheets at once.
A common technique is to moisten a finger and use the dampness on the finger to improve friction between the finger and the topmost sheet, thereby improving the probability of moving only the desired sheet. The most common liquid used for such dampening is saliva, as it is readily available – part of the finger is placed in the mouth or licked and the damp part rubbed across a portion of the topmost sheet. Water, in a receptacle on the desk, can also be used.
Both of these methods have their disadvantages. Both leave the finger damp for extended periods of time, which can be uncomfortable for the clerk. If saliva is used, a residue of the saliva will be left on the sheet; it is well-known that saliva typically contains infectious material. If water is used, the receptacle can be displaced, spilling the water over the desk or floor. Water, if left in an open receptacle, will also typically contain infectious material.
The fixed position of the finger can also lead to repetitive strain injury.
In addition, the dampness of the finger is variable, so the accuracy of lifting the sheets is also variable.
It is therefore a long felt need to provide a device that does not require dampness to function, that will not lift or remove more than one sheet in a single lifting operation, that will not leave a residue of any kind on the sheets and that does not require a plurality of operations to stamp and move a sheet.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The following description is provided, alongside all chapters of the present invention, so as to enable any person skilled in the art to make use of said invention and sets forth the best modes contemplated by the inventor of carrying out this invention. Various modifications, however, will remain apparent to those skilled in the art, since the generic principles of the present invention have been defined specifically to provide a means and method for grasping a sheet such as, but not limited to, a paper sheet so that it may be lifted without contact between a lifting hand and the sheet.
The lifting stamp of the present invention is configured to lift a thin sheet, typically paper, typically with at least one of printing and writing on it, rapidly and accurately, without requiring dampness or contact between a finger and the printed sheet.
In preferred embodiments, the lifting stamp is in communication with a stamping mechanism that can imprint information on the thin, typically printed, sheet. The information can be a date, a time, a logo, an invoice stamp (such as, but not limited to "paid", "overdue"), an identification stamp (such as, but not limited to, a number or a name), and any combination thereof. Therefore, in a single, smooth, rapid operation, a user can stamp the thin sheet and lift it out of the way, thus facilitating rapid and accurate access to a next thin sheet. The operation of stamping and lifting can be done to a stack of loose thin sheets, to fastened-together sheets, or to bound sheets.
The sheet can comprise of paper, polymer, cardboard, cloth, and any combination thereof, or any other material that is not highly permeable.
The sheet can be single, it can be on a pile of sheets, it can be part of a bound document, or it can be part of a stack of sheets which are fastened together, for non-limiting example, clipped together or in a binder.
A sheet can comprise carbon paper, carbonless paper, a balance sheet, a bill, an invoice, a check, a check stub, a tax form, a bookkeeping form, an accounting form, currency, a loose leaf form, a transparency, an envelope, a folder, a badge, a calendar page, a page for at least one address, a Day-Timer page, a page comprising at least one telephone number, a planner page, an address label, a form, a document, an application, a questionnaire, a blank, a coupon, a chart, a letter, a tear-off slip, an application form, an entry form, a data sheet, a pro forma and any combination thereof.
A few non-limiting examples of a bound document comprising printed (and blank) sheets are a book, a bound notebook, a duplicate or triplicate book, a bill book, an accounting book, a cash book, a balance book, an accounting ledger, a bookkeeping journal, a preprinted form, a time card, an address book, a Day-Timer, a monthly planner, a diary, a telephone book, and a calendar.
Sheets can be fastened together with, for non-limiting example, a paper clip, a staple, a binder clip, a split-pin paper fastener or brad, a two-piece paper fastener, a treasury tag, adhesive, a comb binder, a binder spine, a binding coil, a binding spiral, a spring paper fastener, a currency strap (also called a currency band or bill strap), tape, adhesive tape and any combination thereof.
Figs. 1-2 schematically illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the lifting stamp ( 200 ) of the present invention. Figs. 1A-B schematically illustrate perspective views of the lifting stamp ( 200 ), from different angles, and Fig. 1C schematically illustrates a side view of the lifting stamp ( 200 ). Fig. 2A shows an end view, showing the cut line (A-A) for the cross-section shown in Fig. 2B . In this embodiment, the lifting stamp ( 200 ) comprises a housing ( 21 ) and a sliding arm ( 2 ) configured to be slidable into the housing ( 21 ). The housing ( 21 ) is configured to be held in one hand. The size is exemplary; larger or smaller lifting stamps are within the scope of the embodiment.
In preferred variants of this embodiment, the housing ( 21 ) also comprises a conventional office stamping mechanism (not shown), such as is used to put dates, logos, etc. onto documents. In Figs. 1A-B , guides ( 29 ) for a conventional stamping mechanism (not shown) can be seen. In some variants of this embodiment, the lifting stamp ( 200 ) does not comprise a stamping mechanism.
The sliding arm ( 2 ) has at least two configurations, an extended configuration ( 2’ ), where the sliding arm ( 2 ) is in an extended position, protruding outward from the housing ( 21 ) and a retracted position (dotted, 2" ), where the majority of the sliding arm ( 2 ) is retracted into the housing ( 21 ). The distal face of the sliding arm ( 2 ), the face furthest from the housing ( 21 ), comprises a sheet clinging mechanism ( 12 ), which can be a suction cup, a low-tack pressure-sensitive adhesive, a removable pressure-sensitive adhesive, an electrostatically charged surface and any combination thereof.
Fig. 1D schematically illustrates the extended configuration, and Fig. 1E schematically illustrates the retracted position of the stamp. In the extended configuration ( 2’ ) shown in Fig. 1D , the spring ( 3 , not shown) is fully extended so that the sliding arm ( 2 ) is in its fully extended configuration, with the majority of the sliding arm ( 2 ) outside the housing ( 21 ) of the lifting stamp ( 200 ). A conventional lip or flange (not shown) or other conventional stopping mechanism prevents over-extension of the sliding arm ( 2 ) and also prevents removal of the sliding arm ( 2 ) from the housing ( 21 ).
In preferred embodiments, the housing ( 21 ) of the lifting stamp ( 200 ) comprises a conventional stamp in communication with a conventional stamping mechanism. Preferably, the stamping mechanism retains the stamp within the housing ( 21 ) except during the act of stamping. Conventional stamping mechanisms of this kind are well-known in the art.
Fig. 1E schematically illustrates the retracted position of the stamp. In the retracted configuration ( 2" ) shown in Fig. 1E , the spring ( 3 , not shown) is compressed so that the sliding arm ( 2 ) is in its fully retracted position, with the majority of the sliding arm ( 2 ) within the housing ( 21 ) of the lifting stamp ( 200 ). In preferred embodiments of the lifting stamp ( 200 ), as schematically illustrated in Fig. 1E , when the sliding arm ( 2 ) is in its retracted configuration ( 2" ), a conventional stamp ( 31 ) has also been transferred to a stamping position, as schematically illustrated, so that, as the sheet is stamped, the sheet clinging mechanism ( 12 ) is activated so that subsequent lifting of the lifting stamp ( 200 ) will also lift the sheet. Note that, as shown, the position of the conventional stamp ( 31 ) is indicated, not its shape or size, nor is the stamping mechanism shown, since stamping mechanisms are well-known in the art.
The sliding arm ( 2 ) is held in the extended configuration ( 2’ ) by a spring ( 3 , see Fig. 2B ). When a user presses the lifting stamp ( 200 ) against a surface, the spring ( 3 ) contracts and the sliding arm ( 2 ) slides into the housing ( 21 ). When the sliding arm ( 2 ) has reached the limit of its travel, either because the spring ( 3 ) is fully compressed or because further movement of the sliding arm ( 2 ) is prevented by a step, flange, peg or other conventional stopping mechanism, the sheet clinging mechanism ( 12 ) is in close contact with the sheet, thereby inducing the sheet to cling to the sheet clinging mechanism ( 12 ). Lifting of the lifting stamp ( 200 ) allows the spring ( 3 ) to extend. When the spring ( 3 ) is fully extended, the portion of the sheet in contact with the sheet clinging mechanism ( 12 ) will also be raised and the sheet can be easily moved, if desired. The attractive force between the sheet and the lifting stamp ( 200 ) being weak, the lifting stamp ( 200 ) is easily disengaged from the sheet.
It should be noted that, in variants of embodiments that comprise a conventional office stamping mechanism, the sheet can be stamped with a date, identification, etc. and lifted in a single operation.
Fig. 2B shows a cross-section view of the lifting stamp ( 200 ) along a plane (A-A, see Fig. 2A ) parallel to the longer axis of the lifting stamp ( 200 ). The lifting stamp ( 200 ) comprises a housing ( 21 ), a sliding arm ( 2 ) configured to be slidable into the housing ( 21 ) and a spring ( 3 ) connecting the housing ( 21 ) and the sliding arm ( 2 ). The spring ( 3 ) is configured to return the sliding arm ( 2 ) to its extended position ( 2’ ) when pressure is removed from the distal end of the sliding arm ( 2 ). Guiding grooves or guiding protrusions ( 23 ) are provided to ensure smooth vertical movement of the sliding arm ( 2 ).
Fig. 3 shows an exploded view of the lifting stamp ( 200 ). The lifting stamp ( 200 ) comprises a housing ( 21 ), a sliding arm ( 2 ) configured to be slidable into the housing ( 21 ) and a spring ( 3 ) connecting the housing ( 1 ) and the sliding arm ( 2 ). The spring ( 3 ) is configured to return the sliding arm ( 2 ) to its extended position (shown) when pressure is removed from the distal end of the sliding arm ( 2 ). Guiding grooves or guiding protrusions ( 23 ) are provided to ensure smooth vertical movement of the sliding arm ( 2 ). The distal face of the sliding arm ( 2 ) the face furthest from the housing ( 1 ), comprises a sheet clinging mechanism ( 12 ), which can be a suction cup, a low-tack pressure-sensitive adhesive, a removable pressure-sensitive adhesive, an electrostatically charged surface and any combination thereof.
Figs. 4-5 schematically illustrate another embodiment, a lifting stamp that is retrofittable to a conventional office stamp (not shown). The retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) is configured to be mounted to a conventional office stamp (not shown) so that stamping a document and lifting and moving it can be done in a single operation, with the conventional office stamp stamping the document and the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) enabling the document (the sheet) to be lifted and moved.
Figs. 4A-E schematically illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ). Figs. 4A-B schematically illustrate perspective views of the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ), from different angles, Figs. 4C-D schematically illustrate side views of the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ), while Fig. 4E schematically illustrates an end view of the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ).
Fig. 5A shows an end view, showing the cut line (A-A) for the cross-section shown in Fig. 5Band Fig. 6 shows an exploded view of the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ).
In this embodiment, the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) comprises a housing ( 1 ) and a sliding arm ( 2 ) configured to be slidable into the housing ( 1 ). The housing ( 1 ) is configured to be held in one hand. The size is exemplary; larger or smaller lifting stamps are within the scope of the embodiment. The retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) also comprises a clip ( 4 ), configured to securely hold a conventional office stamp (not shown). In the embodiment shown, the clip (4) is U-shaped and is comprised of a strong, flexible material such as, but not limited to, spring steel. In the embodiment shown, the distal (bottom) ends ( 15 ) of the arms of the U curve inward, so that the clip ( 4 ) will securely hold a conventional office stamp. The handles ( 14 ) are rotatably attached to the distal ends ( 15 ) of the U by means of hinges. In the embodiment shown, the hinges are integral to the arms, being formed by bending the side portion of the distal ends of each arm. In other variants of this embodiment, glued-on hinges can be used. The handles ( 14 ) are used to mount the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) onto the conventional office stamp. With the handles ( 14 ) in an upward-pointing position, with the base of the U proximal to (above) the arms, as shown in Figs. 4-6 , a user can put inward-directed pressure on the handles ( 14 ). This induces the distal ends ( 15 ) of the arms to move apart, leaving a gap sufficiently wide to insert the conventional office stamp between the arms. Release of the handles ( 15 ) then allows the arms to move together, positioning the arms in close contact with the conventional office stamp and positioning the inward curves at the distal ends ( 15 ) of the arms under the lower side of the conventional office stamp, thus holding the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) snugly and fixedly on the conventional office stamp. The handles ( 14 ) can then be rotated so that the base of the U is distal to the arms, so that there will not be unexpected detachment of the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) from the conventional office stamp during use.
Fig. 5B shows a cross-section view of the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) along a plane (A-A, see Fig. 5A ) parallel to the longer axis of the retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ). The retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) comprises a housing ( 1 ), a sliding arm ( 2 ) configured to be slidable into the housing ( 1 ) and a spring ( 3 ) connecting the housing ( 1 ) and the sliding arm ( 2 ). The retrofittable lifting stamp ( 100 ) also comprises a clip ( 4 ), configured to securely hold a conventional office stamp (not shown). The spring ( 3 ) is configured to return the sliding arm ( 2 ) to its extended position (as shown) when pressure is removed from the distal end of the sliding arm ( 2 ). Guiding grooves or guiding protrusions ( 23 ) are provided to ensure smooth vertical movement of the sliding arm ( 2 ).
