Description

Gs24149 Case This invention relates to samples of plastic laminates and the method of producing such i The decorative plastic laminates with which the invention is concerned in those made by printing a pattern on a paper and then laminating the printed paper with various layers of melamine to produce a hard decorative Such are sold under many Trade such as and Hitherto when samples of decorative plastic laminates were to be made available to prospective it was necessary to prepare the laminate and to a small piece which could used as a In this necessitated the production of special sheets which were then cut up into the and plurality of the samples of the various types of decorative plastic j laminate would then be assembled into a swatch j due to the hard nature of the laminate would be very the production of such swatches is an expensive involving as it the production of special sample sheets and the cutting up of In an attempt to reduce and the bulkiness of such attempts have been made to print reproductions of the plastic but great difficulties i have been experienced in matching the printed samples of the j actual laminates even when using nine different printing We have now discovered it is possible to I prepare accurately matched of the plastic laminates by taking the decorative or grain paper to provide the decorative feature of the and providing it with a the present invention provides a method of producing a plastic laminate wherein a base or grain paper used in the production the laminate is provided with a clear suc that the coated matches substantiall exactly a plastic laminate produced using the same base or grain The resulting sheet of paper may be cut up mounted onto colour or may alternatively be made up into whioh considerably bulky heavy and expensive than swatches of the actual laminate another aspect of the present invention provides a colour card of plastic laminate comprising a backing mounted on said backing a plurality of different plastic laminate each of which comprises a piece of a decorative base paper used in the production of the laminate provided with a clear coating such that the coated piece matches substantially exactly a plastic laminate produced using the same base The lacquer employed in preparing the samples may any convenient clear and while it is preferably a cellulose other lacquers may be examples of which are polyurethane chemical setting such as calendering lacquers and spirit Traces of as are added to the so when a thin coat of the lacquer is applied to the aforesaid base or grain the coated paper will match almost exactl actual The of the lacqusr is necessary due to fact that the resins employed in the formation of the laminate slightly darken the colour of the base or grain The manner in which the lacquer is applied may be any of those conventionally employed for applying such as either manually straight roller reverse roller gravure roller curtain coating or silk the lacquer may be applied by a printing technique using a transparent such as by screen letter press or letter set offset dry offset or gravure One preferred method of applying the lacquer is b means of a This comprises a rigid bar around which is closely wound 19 inch or wire which soldered at its ends to the The bar is placed on the paper which is resting on a flat and a pool of lacquer is placed in front of the The bar then drawn down the paper and leaves behind a coating of the thickness of which depends upon the diameter of the wire wound around the With all these and especially when using the it may be desirable to apply two or even more coatings of lacquer to the but depends upon the thickness of coating which in turn depends upon the trace pigment content of the All these techniques enable matt or glossy finishes to be as if matting agents may be added to the lacquer or the coating the base or grain paper may V be effected using a laminating technique by laminating the paper with a film of clear synthetic which may be The film may be softened with a solvent or by heat in order to adhere it to the but where an adhesive is may be desirable to the adhesive rather than the film in order to obtain the r quired In order to enable the invention to be more readily an example thereof will now be described in greater In this example it was desired to match a decorative laminate having a matt finish and a medium teak grain and A sample of the base or paper used in the preparation of the plastic laminate was coated with a coating of an inch thick of a tinted cellulose lacquer having the following Clear cellulose lacquer 220 Matting agent Pigments Black a trace violet a trace White a trace The resulting coated paper matched exactly with the decorative laminate as and was cut up small pieces for mounting on a colour card bearing a plurality of similarly prepared samples of other decorative plastic laminates As indicated in the the coating of the clear lacquer was of an inch but it will be appreciated that the thickness of and the of trace pigmentation of the clear lacquer may he varied within wide although they may well be dependent upon one another to the extent that a thicker coating may require less pigment and vice The coating of the base or grain paper may be carried out in any conventional manner and is conveniently carried out by a roller coating technique using a doctor blade mounted above a roll over which the material to be coated the space behind the blade to the direction of travel of the to be being fed with 7 insufficientOCRQuality
