This invention relates to improvements in knitting More the invention concerns a knitting machine having a single flat needle a large number of sinker elements aligned parallelly row at constant intervals across the forward edge of the needle bed in the longitudinal direction a large of latch needles so aligned in a row alternately between the sinker elements in the needle bed that they can slide forward and return perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction of the needle and a oarriage with for accomplishing knitting upon bein moved reoiprooatingly along the longitudinal direotion of the needle bed thereby to aotuate the needles in It ie an objeot of the invention to provide a knitting particularly a hand knitting of the type wherein latch needles are in by appropriately selecting the necessary latoh the transfer of loops suspended from said needles to respectively adjacent needles is automatically whereby openings in the knitted fabric oan be accurately and whereby knitting operations such as knitting of laces and patterns oan be easily and practically carried According to the present there is provided a knitting machine as it essential latoh needles which are so adapted and arranged that at least the forward end part of eaoh latoh needle can pass over an adjacent sinker element and move relative to an adjacent latoh needlej a latch needle actuating oarriage whioh is so mounted across the needle bed that it can slide means in the longitudinal direction of the needle beds and provided in said carriage for actuating the latch needles so that certain predetermined latch needles spaced apart with one or needles therebetween from among said needle can he proached at least at their forward respectively to adjacent latch each of the two latch needles so caused to approach relatively to undergo relative movement in their sliding thereby causing one of said two latch needles to pass into a needle loop suspended from the other at the same causing the needle suspending this loop to knock over and be extracted from the In the practice of the it is possible to form the mechanism for operating the latch needle actuating carriage so in order cause two adjacent latch needles to approach each for one of two mutually adjacent needles is at least at its forward end to move transversely to approach the other and so that the latch needle which has so moved is caused to return to its original position between adjacent sinker elements on both as means for causing one of each pair of mutually adjacent latch needles to approach the it is possible also to provide in the latch needle actuating carriage a mechanism whereby one of the needles is caused to project beyond the forward ends of the and the forward part of this projecting latch needle is view of the machine according to present invention Throughout the drawings l ike parts are designated by like reference numerals and The la needle single 22 bed knitting machine such as shown in and comprising a needle bed 1 a large number of sinkers 3 which are fixed to the needle bed forward edge 2 along the needle bed 1 in such a manner that they are paral lelly arranged at a certain val therebetween and directed in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction the needle a large number of latch needles which are arranged between sinkers so as to be forwardly slid and retraoted to their original pos itions and a knitting carriage C provided with cams adapted to operate said latch needles for knitting operation when the carriage is slid rightward and leftward along the needle bed the longitudinal ion thereof has been conventionally present invention relates to improvements of conventional so that constructio and operation of the machine itself are omitted herei and only the improved points of the machine be described Referring to a first embodiment of the present a latch needle operating carriage as shown in to is used for transferring a yarn loop from a latch needle to the adjacent latch carriage is provided at its eliding side with various members to a latch engagement member 5 and other Operations and constructions said cam latch engagement members and other members will be understood from the following Referring to 1 to among the latch needles IT participating in the knitting a needle suspending yarn loop corresponding to a position where an opening is to be made advanced ly relative to the othe needles and is thus disposed the needle bed 1 as indicated in said needle bed being provided a large number of sinkers thereto at the edge 2 of the needle The cam members are so that the butt of the needle passes through the designated by line and tne butt of the needle is prepared for passing through transfer path designated by line The needle the hook tip of which is projecting beyond the sinker 3 in position shown advances in accordance with the whereupon a latch engagement member extending downwardly from the carriage so as to be disposed at the part beyond the sinker 3 coincides with the rear end of the opened latch a and prevents the loop caught on the latch from slipping off onto the The other needle which was not selected not previously advanced to as in the case of the needle advances to the position of in accordance with the needle path where the forward end of its hook projects very slightly beyond the sinker Prom the position of the needle advances wisely in accordance with the needle path At this the ward end of the needle is progressively raised by a 7 provided on an overhanging arm 6 fixed to the forward part of the carriage 4 to confront the sinker whereby the needle becomes inclined as shown in the position of being raised slightly higher than the upper end of the sinker 3 in preparation for passing over the latch engagement member coincidence with the inclination of the cam permits the needle to be thus at the position of a holding leaf spring 8 for pressing downwardly the needle contacts this The carriage 4 is provided with a rotating shaft 9 which is installed in approximate alignment with the line of the carriage 4 as shown in A gear 1C fixed to one end of said shaft 9 is as the carriage 4 travelsj to mesh with the needle slot of the needle bed 1 and forcibly rotate the shaft 9 On the other end of the shaft there is fixed a rotating member from which pressing pins 12 for forcibly pressing only the raised needles in the rotational direction thereof protrude The pin 12 presses the needle which has arrived at the position of in the direction opposite to the direction of advance of the carriage as shown in the forward part of this needle passes over the sinker 3 as indicated on line IV in quickly drops into the low part of the cam being assisted by the downward force of the pressing leaf spring whereby the needle is superposed in a crossed state over the adjacent needle and cannot return to its original position between the adjacent sinkers 3 on both As a the loop caught in the latch a of the needle fronts the extreme end of the hook of the needle and opens its eye The is caused by the advance cam to advance 1 from the vicinity of the position of along the inclined forward advance part of the needle path x advances to approximately the tuck position in vicinity of the position of and is inserted through the eye of the loop caught on the needle The latch engagement member which has been suppressing the passing of the loop over the latch in the positions of and is not present in the position of and quent in the positions of and a brush wheel 13 for holding the knitted fabric contacts the forward part of the loop so as to cause the loop to the loop caught on the needle moves back slightly and is transferred from the latch a onto the Between the position of and of the an upward projection of the cam 7 follows the low part the loop transfer needle path y is in the retracted position because of the guiding effeot of a centre the needle is caused by the upward projection to be raised again to a level higher than that of the sinker 3 as it is so tracts in accordance with the needle path y to the position of the The other needle is caused by the needle path x traversing directly across the lower surface of the centre cam and by a formed in the lower surface of the projection of the cam 7 to pass to the vicinity of the position of the to be described without changing the advance position at approximately the tuck That needle with loop maintained in the positional state on the tip of the latch of the open travels through the needle bed up to a point near the position of the Since the needle path y is caused to retreat by a retreat cam at a point after the position of the the needle guided by this needle path retracts from the needle bed forward edge 2 and completely casts off the loop from the back of the latch the needle disengages from the upward projection of the cam 7 and is caused by the elastic energy stored therein when it passed over the sinker 3 to return to its original position between the loop is transferred completely into the hook of the needle whereupon the automatic loop transfer is completed as shown in There may be some instances wherein the needle immediately upon moving onto the upward projection in the vicinity of the position of the is caused by the elastic energy stored therein to return over the sinker 3 thereby to return to its original position between its adjacent In such a the loop is stretched between both needles and is so complete loop transfer occurs in the vicinity of position of the Since the needle paths and y become confluent at a point after the position of the the needle still holding the loops and in its retreats to a position near the needle bed forward edge while the needle which has cast off the loop moves slightly forward and assumes approximately the same position of Referring to 7 through showing the second embodiment of the the arrangement of the latch needles and the needle bed 1 is the same as that in the example illustrated in and the essential features thereof are shown in 7 and 11 The needle passes along a needle path x of a carriage 24 and the needle is prepared for passing along a loop transfer needle path As shown in the needles and which have entered the needle paths x and y advance and assume their spective positions shown in 11 the needle being so positioned that the rear end of its open latch a is approximately at the same position as the sinker 3 thereby to hold the loop and prevent it from slipping onto the During the advance from the position of the to the position of the the forward end of the needle is progressively raised by a cam 27 provided on an overhanging arm 26 fixed to the carriage being inclined at its forward part as shown so that it is slightly higher than the upper end of the sinker and thereby being readied for passing over the guide slots 25 formed in the needle bed 1 for passing each pair of adjacent needles and are intercommunicated by an intercommunicating slot as shown in at the position of the the needle is in the raised position as described it is in a state wherein it is capable entering the intercommunicating slot Past the position of the since a brush 28 makes contact and becomes a resistance the needle is pushed in the direction of travel of the carriage 24 passing over the sinker is superposed diagonally above the needle as shown in Successively the descending inclination 27a of the cam 27 in the interval from the position of the to the position of the causes the needle to descend as indicated in the needle thereby being so positioned that the loop caught on its latch a is in a position confronting the tip of the hook of the needle similarly as in the case of the afo scribed embodiment of the The advance of the needle path y in the interval between the positions of the and oauses the needle to advance At the same a brush wheel 33 contacts the knitted fabric and pushes the loop back toward the needle bed forward edge the loop is cast off positively from the latch a and is transferred onto the in the interval from the position of the to the position of the the needle path x is caused by an advance cam to the needle advances as the loop is held by the brush wheel and the forward end of its hook passes through the eye of the loop caught on the needle Throughout the interval the position of the through the position of the the brush 28 continuously exerts a sideward force o the needle In the interval from the position of the through the position of the the upward projection 27b causes the needle to rise to a position slightly higher than the sinker 3 similarly as at the position of the In the interval from the position of the through the position of the the needle is lowered by a triangular cam 27c provided on the upward projection 27b of the cam at the same the resistance of the triangular cam 27c causes the forward part of the needle to return over the previously passed over sinker 3 in the direction opposite to that of the travel of the carriage thereby returning to its original position between its adjacent sinkers The other needle is again guided in advancing movement by the needle path x and thereby caused to advance toward a part 27d provided on the lower surface of the upward projection 27b of the cam 27 as described the retraction of the needle and the advance of the needle cause the hook of the needle to pass through the eye of the loop caught on the needle o at the same is by the loop whereby the needle is readied for casting off the loop The triangular cam 27c in actual imparts a guiding action as indicated by chain line in 7 with respect to the needle path In the interval between the position of the and the position of the the needle path y is caused to retreat by the guiding effect of a retreat and the needle is retracted rearwardly from the sinker whereby the loop is L of the needle off forwardly from the back of the latch At subs the same the needle disengages from the upward projection 27b of the cam 27 and the forward part thereof is returned to the normal state from the raised state of the position of the and the loop together the loop is caught within the hook of the needle whereupon a full loop transfer is completed as indicated in the confluence of the needle paths and y cause both needles and to be aligned in substantially the same Eeferring to and 14 showing the essential struction and arrangement of the third embodiment of the each of the latch needles is provided with an engagement part formed on its stem slightly rearward of the tip of the opened latch a as The selection of certain needles from among the needles K to produce the arrangement and is the same as that in the aforedescribed first embodiment of the The needles and which have entered the needle paths x and 1 2 y from the position shown in respectively acvance to their positions shown in The advance of the needle causes its loop to be shifted from its latch a onto its stem and be caught by the engagement part whereby the loop is drawn At the same the forward part of the needle is raised slightly above the sinker similarly as in the first embodiment of the by a cam 47 an overhanging arm 4 of the carriage As the needles advance the position of the to the position of the the combination of a rotating shaft a gear rotatin member a pressing pin on the rotating member d a pressing spring 48 having the same function as equivalent parts in the first embodiment of the invention operate to push the needle in the direction opposite to that of the travel of the carriage whereby the needle passes over the sinker 3 and is superposed over the needle Since the end of the cam 47 simultaneously the needle descends as shown in being assisted by the wire spring and crosses over the needle IT thereby positioning the eye of the loop immediately in front of the forward end of the hook of the needle in preparation for loop In the interval from position of the to position of the the needle is guided by the needle path x and passes it hook end through the eye of the loop assumes an advanced position which is slightly rearward of that of the needle thereby shifting the loop which it held previously moves onto a cam ce with the ward part of the advanced end of the needle and is thus prepared for being again The action of the brush wheel 53 is the same as the brush wheel 13 in the case of the first embodiment of the inven In the interval from position of the through position of the only the needle is caused by the needle path x to retract slightly causes the loop to be in approximate engagement with the rear end of the opened latch a in preparation for the closing movement The other needle raised by the inclination of a cam 54 to a position slightly higher than the sinker 3 similarly as in the position of the at the same time that it is thus the needle is caused by the elastic energy stored therewithin to return over the previously passed over sinker 3 and thereby to return to its original position between its adjacent sinkers on both when the end of the cam 54 is reached in the position of the the needle g has descended to the same height as the needle and the loop is disposed across the stem rearward from the latch a of the needle Kg and the interior of the hook of the needle as indicated in In the interval from position of the through tion of the since the needle paths x and y become the needles g and retract simultaneously to the rear part of the sinker The needle g casts off the loop from the back of the latch at the same the needle casts off the loop from the back of the latch a as the hook of the needle holds the loop As a the loop is passed under and through the loop thereby to form a new knitting loop Referring to through the example of the knitting machine according to the invention shown therein is provided with a needle bed along whose forward edge there are parallelly aligned a row of a large number of sinkers between which there are alternately aligned latch needles capable of sliding in their ward and rearward Each of the needles K is so guided by a needle guide slot 62 provided at the forward part of the needle bed 1 and having a shape which is longer in the vertical direction that the forward part of said needle can move upwardly to a height higher than the upper ends of the above mentioned sinkers the forward part of each needle can be shifted over an adjacent sinker against the elastic force of the needle to he inserted into a position between the neighbouring sinkers on one The needle bed is further provided at its forward part with a needle holder 63 made of an elastic material such as sponge rubber which engages from above the stems of all needles and constantly presses downwardly on all needles N so as hold them their downward Across the upper surface of the needle bed a latch needle actuating oarrlage is so mounted as to be slidable in the longitudinal of the needle The carriage has on reverse side a rear partition wall which extends the of the forward of a rear passage which permits the passage of the butts of needles at the most rearward position of the needle A front partition wall 66 disposed forward of the rear partition wall 65 and extends the length of the oarrlage forward of the position to which the butts B of the needles of a positio P are guided and the position P being advanced up to a position immediately forward of that for atoh extraction from the position E advanced forward of the most rearward position of the neele A triangular cam 67 projecting rearwardly is provided at approximately the centre part of the wall The position E one where the butts of the needles enter the stitch forming track of the knitting In symmetrical arrangement on the left and right sides of the triangular cam 67 and between the rear tition wall 65 and front partition wall there are vided retraction cam members 68 for producing cams 69 the needles at the knitting position E and the needle selection position At three places on g each outer parts near the cams intermediate parts inside and innermost there are outer retraction oams intermediate retraction cams and inner retraction cams Advancing cams 73 are provided between the retraction cams 68 and the rear partition wall On the outer sides the advancing cams there are formed outer advancing cams 74 t ay for engaging with the B of the needles if at the ion position E and causing the needles to advance to the position immediately forward of that for disengagement thereby to guide and introduce the needles to the outer retraction cams On the inner sides of the outer advancing cams 74 there are formed inner advancing cams 75 causing the needles K whioh have been caused to retract by the outer retraction cams 70 to advance slightly again and guiding and introducing the needles to the intermediate retraction cams By the above described cam the batts B of the ting needles at the position E are guided to the path designated by line as shown in while B of the needles at the needle selection position F are guided to the path designated by line In the path there are provided needle pressing cams which project downwardly and function to engage with the upper part of the batts B of the needles E and press and hold the needles in a low Along the forward part of the carriage there is formed a channel part 77 is open side facing On the and on the upper surface of the lower flange part 77a of this channel part 77 there are provided needle lifting cams 78 of approximately S and inclined parts 78a sloping downwardly are formed on the outer sides of the cams on the inner sides of the cams there are formed parts 78b 78b which are substantially perpendicular to the upper surface of the lower flange part 77a and engaging with the forward parts of the needles 11 guided and introduced into the path lift the forward parts of the needles to a position slightly above the upper ends of the aforementioned sinkers Auxiliary needle lifting oams 79 79 are provided at positions rearward of and slightly inside of the needle lifting cams 7 Downwardly sloping inclined parts 79a 79a and 79b are formed outside and inside of the cams 79 79 engaging with the forward parts of the needles guided and introduced into the path lift said forward parts whereby the difference in height of the forward parts of the latch needles lifted by the auxiliary needle lifting cams 79 79 and those of the latch needles lifted by the needle lifting cams 78 is made small thereby to prevent slack in on needles lifted by the needle lifting cams the loops needles Needle raising cams 80 80 are provided inside of the auxiliary needle lifting cams 7 79 and function to raise again the knitting needles Έ having disengaged from the needle lifting cams 78 are positioned on the auxiliary needle needle raising cams 80 80 are fabricated integrally from a single sheet of Needle actuating cams 81 81 are fixed on the left and right sides on the rear surface of the web part 77b of the channel part 77 engaging with the forward parts of the needles which have been lifted by the needle lifting cams and are in the path function to shift said forward as the carriage base plate 64 is forcibly in the same the forward parts of the needles shifted by the needle actuating cams 81 81 pass over the tips of the adjacent needles in the path on the side in the direction of travel of the carriage as indicated in 20 the shifted needles IT are caused by the parts 78b 78b of the needle lifting cams 78 to disengage from the needle lifting cams 78 78 and move thereby disengaging from the needle actuating cams 81 and ping in the disengaged That there is constituted a disengaging mechanism through the action of the parts 78b 73b of the needle lifting cams 78 causes the needles 11 to disengage from the needle actuating cams 81 81 The needles which have been disengaged by this disengaging mechanism the needle actuating cams 81 81 engage at their forward parts with the hooks of respectively adjacent needles in the path and assume the states of coupling as indicated in An elastic plate 82 is fixed to the lower surface of the upper horizontal part of the carriage 64 at its forward Until the needles which have been guided in the path disengage from the needle lifting cams 78 78 the elastic plate 82 is engaged with the lower part of the flatches of these needles and lifts said latches thereby holding the needle loops K suspended from the upper parts of the opened latches of the needles and preventing pushed said loops from bein the pushing behind the while the elastic plate 82 is preventing stated it is constantly pressing the said needles downwardly in cooperation with the needle holder compels these needles to descend when they disengage from the needle lifting cams 78 The needle loop transfer mechanism of the above described ment and construction according to 20 operates in the following by means of a known needle selection device in general a large number of latch needles are selectively divided into needles of position and needles of the position F in the ratio for one to and needle loops suspended from the needles transferred to the respectively neighbouring needles That in order to transfer a needle loop K toward the right as indicated in the carriage 64 is moved in sliding motion from left to right toward groups of needles separated into positions E and in the direction of the arrow shown in 15 and The operation of the knitting machine will be further described hereinafter with particular reference to through and 20 through cate the needle loop transfer operation of the needles as viewed in sections resulting from outting the carriage 64 along the lines a through h shown in and shows the state of disposition of latch needles at the time when latch needles are selectively As the carriage 64 is moved from posit ion a reaches posit ion b the knitting needle is caused by the outer advancing cam 74 advance to a posit ion slightly rearward of the position immediately the pushing behind of the latch before kno k At the same t ime the outer inclined part 79a of the auxiliary needle lifting cam 79 causes the forward part of the needle to begin to lift slightly against the elastic force of the needle holder the needle is caused b the needle lift ing cam to be lifted against the elast ic force of the needle holder 63 to a position above the upper end of the sinkers as the carriage 64 is moved from position b to position the needle is lifted by the auxiliary needle lifting cam 7 and at the same time the tip of the needle is caused by the outer retracting cam 70 to retract until it is positioned in alignment with the alignment line of the sinkers one the needle in its state of being lifted by the needle ing cam as it is sustained by the ac ion the elastic plate 82 in the state the behind of the immediately before engages with the needle ing cam by the travel of the carriage 64 j position d is reached from position the knitting needle is maintained in the above described state but the part of the needle is forcibly caused by the needle actuat ing cam to shift in the direction of travel of the The needle thereupon assumes the state shown in 20 immediately is disengaged from the needle lift ing cam by the action of the disengaging that is by the part of the needle lift ing cam At the same t ime the needle disengages from the needle actuat ing cam and is stopped in its shifted position is caused by the effect of the needle holder 63 and the elastic plate 82 to engage with the side of the hook of the needle on the side of the carriage travel direction and be superposed above the needle as At this the needle is elastically pressed in contact with the sinker 3 by the elastic force of the needle urging it to return to its original position between adjacent sinkers the forward end of the knitting needle is tioned to the rear of the needle loop suspended from the needle As the carriage 64 continues to move and the position changes from d to the needle is caused by the inner advancing cam 75 to whereupon its forward end passes through the needle loop suspended from the needle and At the same the needle disengages from the auxiliary needle lifting cam 79 and descends to a lower while the needle still engaged with the needle is maintained in a state of immobility in the rearward As the travel of the carriage 64 is further continued position e to position the needle at its advanced position due to the inner advancing cam 75 forcibly pressed by the action the needle pressing cam which engages with the batt of the needle to the lower part of the needle During this the needle to a position hig er t an the upper ends o the s n At this the needle is forcibly disengaged from the needle which has been forcibly pressed At the same the rising movement of the needle is transmitted through the needle loop to the needle which is thereby urged to rise together with the needle but is prevented from thus rising by the needle pressing cam The needle which has been raised by the needle raising cam 80 is automatically returned by the force due to the elastic energy stored therein to its original position between jacent sinkers on both the needle loop still being suspended from the needle as it is maintained in the position immediately before pushing behind of the as the carriage 64 travels further and the position changes from f to the needle is caused by the intermediate retracting cam 71 to retract its tip to a position rearward of the sinker that to approximately the knitting preparation position At the same the needle loop K is caught on the hook of the needle During this operation since the needle is placed in an immobile and only the needle the needle loop pushes behind the K is whereby the needle loop from the knitting needle and is shifted onto the needle With further travel of the oarriage 64 to change the position from g to the needle is maintained in the above described while the needle is caused b the triangular cam 67 and the inner retracting cam of the other retraction cam 68 to retract to the position E in a manner similar to that of the needle At this the needle loop knocks over from the needle and is transferred to the needle By successively carrying out transfers of the needle loops in the above described and then carrying out knitting by means of a carriage of known type for ordinary it is possible to produce knitted fabrics with that lace knitted when it is desired to transfer the needle loop toward the leftward opposite to that described a large number of needles K are selectively separated as described and then the carriage 64 is moved from right to that in the direction opposite to that of the arrow M shown in and whereby the same operation and result as described above can be As a further embodiment of the is possible to obtain the shifting and approaching action of a pair of mutually adjacent latch needles also by the use of a latch needle actuating carriage such as that illustrated as one example in through in the manner indicated in More of two mutually adjacent latch needles and of a pair to be caused to undergo mutual the needle to be at least at its hook end is first raised from the position shown in to that of 21 and then the needle is passed through the position shown in and transferred to the position of the needle is returned through the positions o 2 and thereby causing it to retreat to he position shown in When the and relative movements of the pair of mutually adjacent latch needles are being carried out to form an opening in the knitted the needle loop suspended from one latch needle which has been shifted is positioned to front forward end of the other adjacent this adjacent needle is in a state wherein it can positively pass through said needle whereby the needle loop transfer operation can be accomplished in a very accurate In the above described by arranging and constructing the mechanism for operating the latch needle actuating carriage so only when the latch needle suspending the needle loop positions its loop to confront the tip part of the adjacent needle after insert ion of this adjacent needle in the returns to its original position between sinker elements while still holding the loop the relative movement in the sliding direction of this needle and loop is the durability of the needle bed and the mechanism for producing the above described sliding movement substantially the oarriage can be caused to slide Furthermore in some cases when the needle is to be shifted to the position shown in difficulty is encountered in simply and effectively overcome by providing in the needle actuating As disclosed above with respect to embodiments the present invention provides a knitting machine of latch needle type arranged and constructed to accomplish an operation at least the forward part of one of two adjacent latch needles from its normal moving said forward part to a position between the sinker elements above the other latch needle for the purpose of passing over a sinker element thereby to cause the two needles to be superposed at least forward parts of said needles at the same t ime causing a loop suspended from said one needle to confront the front part of the front end of the hook of said other needle causing the two needles to undergo forward and rearward movements to transfer loop suspended on said one needle to said other needlej simultaneously said one needle from its thus loop transfer in a completely automatic an further causing one needle to return to original position between adjacent sinkers on both The above described series of operational steps of the two latch needles can be accomplished merely selecting one of the latch needles by means of a needle selecting means as described with respeot to embodiments of the the present invention provides a knitting machine loop transfe between form in the knitted fabric is
