Description

File C / 21780 PATENTS AND DESIGNS ORDINANCE SPECIFICATION Mould or a continuous casting machine nsnsn np »s*^ rmanV I (we) jsHiJTRALNY lAUCHHO-ISSLBDOYATBLSET USTITOTE CHBBH0I METAI&URGII IM. X.J?. BAEDIM, of 2 Baumanskaja ul. 9/23 , Moscow, and vMSU ARSTVENHY SOJUZHY E8STITUTE PHOSTIROVAEIJA KETALLUHGICHESKIKH ZAVODOV, of Prospekt Mira 101, Moscow, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, both Soviet corporations do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the, same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to moulds for continuous casting machines.
Sectional moulds are known in which the walls, forming the short sides of a mould, are clamped by the walls, forming the long sides of the mould, the internal walls of the mould being secured . to the external rigid ones by means of pins.
These existing moulds cannot be rebuilt when the size of ingots being cast has to be varied. Besides, when casting metals of various grades in such moulds, one cannot vary the angle of inclination of walls, forming the short sides of a mould. During the operation of continuous casting machines it has been found that replacement of moulds is time-consuming, because this operation requires disconnecting and subsequent connecting of numerous hoses for the supply of cooling water, and needs careful adjustment of the orientation of the mould axis in relation to the axis of the machine An object of the present invention is the provision of a mould, in which these disadvantages are eliminated.
In the proposed mould according to the present invention the walls, forming its short sides, are provided with a device for shifting these walls along the walls which form the long sides of the mould.
This device allows casting of ingots of varying width in the same mould. Moreover, the walls of such a mould may be inclined according to the practice of casting metals of various grades. The cooling liquid is together and pressed to the mould by means of springs which are released with the aid of hydraulic cylinders during replacement of the mould. The nature of the present invention will however "become more fully appare t from the following description of a preferred embodiment, which is illustrated in the appended drawings, in which Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a mould, manufactured according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of part of the mould complete with a device for adjusting the walls, forming the short sides of the mould; Figure 3 is view of the device in the direction of arrow B (Figure 2); Figure is a side elevation view of the mould, mounted on a table; Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of Figure , taken on line A-A thereof; Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view of Figure 5, taken on line C«0 whereof; Figure 7 is a diagram showing the connection of a collector with a channel for supplying the water* . The proposed mould has two internal chill plates or walls 1, forming the long sides of the mould, and two internal chill plates or walls 2, forming the short sides. In the plates 1 and 2 are holes $ for circulating cooling water. By means of pins 4- the internal chill plates are secured to external support plates 5 which are interlocked by screw threaded tie rods 6 and stationary walls 7. sides of the mould, are also secured with pins 4- to the external support plates 9 provided with holes. The support plates 9 are prevented from shifting in the vertical direction "by the tie rods 6 which pass through slide blocks 10 and the lugs of the support plates 9» being also capable of shifting in the horizontal direction through openings 8 of the backup plates 5 when casting ingots of various width.
The walls forming the short sides of the mould, are adjusted along the walls forming the long sides of the mould, by means of screws 11 (Figure 2), each fixed by one end in a slide block 12 with trunnions 13 which are inserted in vertical slots 1 of a longitudinal slot 15 in the stationary wall 7· The screws 11 are aligned with nuts 16 fixed on the support plate 9· When the screws 11 rotate, the nuts 16 move in the horizontal direction together with the support plates 9 forming the short sides of the mould, and with internal chill plates 2, thus changing the width of the mould.
The trunnions 13 allow the angle of inclination of the chill plates 2 to be varied.
The mould reciprocates in the vertical direction. The mould is mounted on an oscillating table 17 (Figure 4), connected with a mechanism 18 for reciprocating the table 17 together with the mould. The mechanism 18 makes the table reciprocate along vertical columns 19 mounted on a plate 20. Water is supplied to the mould walls through channels 21 annular packings 22 of resilient material, which are secured with nuts 23. The water is supplied to the walls forming the long sides of the mould, directly through the channels 21, and to the walls, forming the short sides of the mould, through flexible sleeves 24 (Figure 4), interconnecting the channels of the walls and allowing the relative position of the walls to be changed when rebuilding the mould.
Water is supplied to the channels 21, emerging on the two long sides of the mould, through two hollow collectors 25· The collectors 25 have connecting pipes 26 (Figures and 7) and branch pipes 27 (Figure 5) complete with movable flexible hoses 28, running from the water main. At both ends of one of the collectors 2 » protruding beyond the mould, rams 29 are secured, along which the second collector can slide* For this purpose the ends of the rams 29 incorporate hydraulic cylinders 30 , to which the working liquid is supplied through holes therein.
The hydraulic cylinders 30 act on covers 31 connected with the collector 25. The rams 29 are provided with shoulders, into which one end of springs 32 are fixed. The other ends of the springs 32 act on the shoulders of sockets 33 connected with the same collector 25· During operation of the mould there is no pressure in the hydraulic system, and the springs 3 clamp together the collectors 255 pressing their connecting pipes 26 to the packing 22 with a force exceeding the counter-pressure of the cooling water. During replacement of the mould the h draulic c linders 0 are o erated thus overcoming the pressure of the spring 32 and drawing apart the collectors 25 to an extent sufficient for free extraction and subsequent further positioning of the mould. Shoulders on the rams 29 limit the ultimate separation and rejoining of the collectors . The collectors can be separated also by the aid of other types of mechanisms, such as screws, worms, and so forth. Symmetrical separation of the collectors 25 in relation to the mould centre is ensured by means of adjuster bolts 34- which are adjusted in such a manner as to make the distance between the ends of said bolts somewhat greater than the distance between the collectors 25 when these are separated to the maximum extent. Each collector is suspended from the table 17 on the tie rods 35 or some other guides, which provides for separation of the collectors and the adjustment of their height. If the collectors are suspended, the shifting of the collectors in the direction of the axis parallel to the long sides of the mould, is prevented by corresponding teeth and guide slots both on the collectors and the frame of the table 17.
The water is drained from the mould through outlet pipes 6 in the hollow of the table 17 and is drawn off through the flexible hoses 37. On the stationary walls 7 of the mould, the position of which does not change during the rebuilding of the mould, there are guide projections 38 ? entering the corresponding slots on the table 17 , as well as brackets 39 , by. means of which the mould rests on the table 17 and and is "bolted to said table. Operation of the hydraulic cylinders 30 permits all the numerous means for the supply of water to the mould to be connected or disconnected in the shortest possible time without the use of manual labour. It also permits rapid replacement of said means with other means, prepared and adjusted on a control table, on which the position of slots for the projections 38 precisely corresponds to the position of slots on the table 17.
