Abstract

A process for preparing an a-aryl pyridyl carbinol compound, comprising: initially reacting an a-aryl aldehyde or ketone with a metal or metal ion electron donor; reacting the product of said initial reaction with a 2-or 4-cyanopyridine; and recovering therefrom the a-aryl pyridyl carbinol compound; or, optionally, hydrogenating the a-aryl pyridyl compound in the reacted mixture in the presence of a palladium catalyst, to produce a second reacted mixture including a corresponding a-aryl piperidyl compound.
