Abstract
A thermal barrier which uses selected fluids trapped within the interstices of materials, between layers of materials, trapped within sealed cells such as in "bubble" packaging or incorporated within foamed materials such as polystyrene to achieve the desired thermal conductivity characeteristics, lowly conductive fluids being used in low conductive barriers and highly conductive fluids in highly conductive barriers. The conductive characteristics of the thermal barrier can be altered as desired by arranging that the fluids of different conductive characteristics can be changed in real-time. The thermal barrier can optionally incorporate surface coatings with specified reflective characteristics, such coatings being protected against chemical attack by air or water by the fluids as selected as above. Such coatings can be used to generate thermal barriers with selective absorptive characteristics. Where gas filled thermal barriers are incorporated in diving suits, a device can be used with automatically compensates for changes in buoyancy with depth.
