IMPROVEMENTS IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTIONS
The present invention relates to improvements in building constructions such as door frames and doors. In particular the invention relates to a pre-fabricated door frame which can be installed in a building with the minimum of effort, the door frame being expandible in its depth and being generally of a two piece construction.
The present invention provides a door frame including a first frame part and a second frame part engageable with the first part, the first frame part comprising a pair of opposed jambs, a lintel extending between the upper ends of the jambs and a saddle board extending between the lower ends of the jambs, each of the jambs and lintel having a rebate at its inner surface to accommodate the edges of a door capable of being mounted in the frame and to provide a door stop, the outer edge of each jamb and lintel having a groove extending from the outer edge into the body of the jambs and lintel parallel to the inner and outer surfaces of the jambs and lintel and with an architrave frame fixed to the edges of the jambs and lintel remote from the groove; the second frame part including a three sided architrave frame with an elongate strip of generally rectangular cross-section extending perpendicularly from the architrave and being engageable in the groove formed around the outer edges of the jambs and lintel of the first frame part, whereby the door frame may be secured about a door opening in a wall structure with the strip being engaged in the groove to the appropriate depth to accommodate the thickness of the structure about the door opening.
Advantageously, mentioned above the invention provides a door frame as in which a strip of sealing material is

Preferably, the outer surfaces of the jambs and lintels of the first frame part have a stepped configuration so that they may fit about the jambs and lintel of an existing door frame forming a door opening.
The invention also provides a door frame in which the rebate to accommodate the door is provided by a slip fixed to a body portion of each jamb and lintel and the groove is formed by a rebated section covered wholly or partly by the slip extending rearwardly from the door stop.
Advantageously, the first frame part includes a further strip to which the architrave of the first part is attached, with the further strip being located in a further rebate formed in the body portion of each jamb and lintel, with the further strip including a sealing element with the slip being interchangeable between overlying the first rebate and the further rebate and the sealing element being alternatively engageable in the strip of the second part or the strip of the first part, whereby the frame may be modified to have the door opening outwardly or inwardly or to have the door hinged from one jamb or the other jamb.
The invention will hereinafter be more particular described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show by way of example only various embodiments of door frames according to the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective cross-sectional view of a first embodiment of door frame according to the invention showing portions of a door frame mounted on a stud wall partition,
940359 showing an architrave and liner strip at one side extended from the frame, but which is fixed to the frame on final fitting in place.
Figure 2 is a perspective cross-sectional view of the first embodiment but with the frame fitted to a block wall construction;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional side view of a second embodiment of door frame fitted over an existing door frame;
0
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional side view through a lintel of a third embodiment of door frame fitted over a wall which is substantially thicker than a standard wall;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view through a lintel of a fourth embodiment of door frame; and
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view through a lintel and through a door saddle of a fifth embodiment of door frame.
Using the embodiments of the invention, it is possible to provide quick fit frames and doors which have many advantages and provides a number of options, and give a versatile door frame kit system, complete with architrave and door saddle.
Referring to the drawings and initially to Figure 1 the first embodiment of a door frame according to the invention includes a first frame part 10 and a second frame part 12 engageable with the first part. The first frame part 10 comprises a pair of opposed jambs 20,21, a lintel extending between the upper ends of the jambs and a saddle 26 board extending between the lower ends of the jambs. Each of the jambs 20,21 and lintel 24 has a rebate 28 at its inner surface 29 to accommodate the edges of a door 40 hinged in
940359 the frame and to provide a door stop 41. The outer edge 45 of each jamb 20,21 and lintel 24 has a groove 46 extending from the outer edge into the body of the jambs 20,21 and lintel 24 parallel to the inner and outer surfaces of the jambs and lintel. An architrave frame 50 is fixed to the edges 48 of the jambs 20,21 and lintel 24 remote from the groove 46.
The second frame part 20 includes a three sided architrave frame 60 with an elongate strip 62 of generally rectangular cross-section fixed to and extending perpendicularly from the architrave 60. It is engageable in the groove 46 formed about the edges 45 of the jambs 20,21 and lintel 24 of the first frame part. The door frame may be secured about a door opening in a wall structure 90 with the strip 62 being engaged in the groove 46 to the appropriate depth to accommodate the thickness of the wall structure 90. A strip of sealing material 85 is fixed to the jambs 20,21 and lintel 24 about the door stop 41 so as to provide a seal between the door stop 41 and door 40 closed in the frame .
In Figure 1 the wall structure 90 is a stud wall partition and in Figure 2 it is a block wall.
The second embodiment of door frame shown in Figure 3 is similar to the embodiment shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 except the outer surfaces of the jambs 120,121 and lintels 124 of the first frame part 110 has a stepped configuration so that it may fit about the jambs and lintels of an existing door frame forming a door opening.
The third embodiment shown in Figure 4 includes a significantly longer strip 262, so as to accommodate the extra wall thickness of the structure.
The fourth embodiment of door frame shown in Figure 5,
940359
- 5 and in which the rebate 328 to accommodate the door is provided by a slip 335 fixed to a body portion of each jamb and lintel 324 and the groove 345 is formed by a rebated section 325 covered wholly or partly by the slip 335 extending rearwardly from the door stop 341.
In the fifth embodiment shown in Figure 6, the first frame part 410 includes a further strip 413 to which the architrave 450 of the first part is attached, with the further strip 413 being located in a further rebate 414 formed in the body portion of each jamb and lintel 424.
The further strip 413 includes a sealing element 485 with the slip 435 being interchangeable between overlying the first rebate 425 and the further rebate 414. The sealing element 485 is alternatively engageable in strip 462 of the second part 412 or the strip 413 of the first part 410. Accordingly, the frame may be modified to have the door opening outwardly or inwardly or to have the door hinged from one jamb or the other jamb. The saddle 426 is constructed to fit over an existing saddle Z.
