Abstract
A prefabricated doorset, which has a head lining member 10 with a rebated underside profile 12, and either no applied head stop or rectangular applied head stop, which has the rebated portion 13 removed at each end only to receive "square-cut" stile members 10, with integral or applied door-stop 20 and pre-fitted bull hinges 16 and striking plate 17 (sheet 4 of 8) positioned equi-distant from stile ends, such that these become reversible and allow for either anti-clockwise 19 or clockwise 18 (i.e. DUAL) opening of door leaf(s) 25. The head rebate configuration provides for differential head 21 and base 22 door-leaf clearance gaps (i.e. Industry standard head clearance and deeper base clearance to accept floor finish clearance gap) to fixed standard, although the head profile shape can be produced to accommodate either standard U.K. or European door leaf thicknesses and an alternative base clearance gap if required. Together with reversible door leaf, the doorset is thus prepared for DUAL HANDED site installation without site modification to the door-frame/lining or door leaf. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPANEL A] "DUAL HANDED PREFABRICATED DOORSETS"
This invention relates to "DUAL HANDED" prefabricated doorsets (single action) which, in addition to being reversible for clockwise 18 or anticlockwise 19 door leaf openings ("door handing") also provides the capability of maintaining a differential head and base door leaf clearance (for dual orientation) upon kit assembly, by virtue of the special rebated head lining configuration 10 and junction with the stile members and associated frame / leaf assembly method.
The invention is equally suitable for prefabricated doorsets produced in different framing materials (e.g. timber; 10 aluminium 30 ; steel 40
Glass reinforced plastic / timber etc.) used in - conjunction with door - leaf material options.
The product has also been designed with the capability of achieving designated fire - resistant performance levels and sound insulation performance levels within the same inherent product.
Whilst the head lining profile on the underside 10 is of particular importance, the overall framing member dimensions are discretionary. The invention is especially suited to standard metric or Imperial door leaf height production and door leaf thicknesses to suit the U.K. or European markets.
The doorset (kit) is "factory - prepared" ready for economy of site installation time / costs. All pre - machining of both door frame / lining + stop members and door leaf for non - handed butt hinges, striking plate and door ironmongery including latch / lock sets with reversible tongues are works prepared for "dual handed" frame / leaf assembly.
Although the head lining must be rebated as 12 without any horizontal head stop (or rectangular profile stop only), the door stiles (square cut both ends) may have integral door stops or be linings with applied sq. cut door stops to the same length as stiles.
[PANEL B ]
Prefabricated doorsets (in kit form or flilly prefabricated) are well known to reduce site fixing time / costs, simplify site installation, improve product quality and maintain a consistent product and performance standard. Such doorsets are available in a variety and permutation of materials for framing members and door leaf (leaves).
Many doorsets are offered "factory prepared" in either assembled or "kit" (knock down) form complete with pre - machined door leaves and fitted ironmongery etc., such that only partial doorset handing is achieved (see reference sheet 8 of 8) (i) the door leaf only is reversible and "factory - prepared" for site
installation to either hand (opening) in "non - handed" door - frame / linings. 26 - 27 - 29 (ii) the door - frame/ lining and door leaf are both reversible but only
provide for identical head and base door leaf clearances and are
limited by having pre - fixed and mitred applied door stops 28,
inhibiting simple site reversibility.
(iii) the door - frame / lining and door leaf are both reversible for
alternative handing but can only duplicate the head door leaf
clearance at die base which is insufficient for normal floor
clearances, involving "site - cutting" of the door leaf bottom - edge,
rendering it subsequently non - reversible.
The aim of the present invention is the development of a "factory prepared" doorset (in kit form), that is ready for site installation to either "door handing" requirement, including maintaining differential head and base door leaf clearances to obviate "site - cutting" of door leaf for floor finish clearances, allowing future doorset reversibility.
[PANEL C]
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying detail drawing sheets No. 1/8 to 818 inclusive.
Sheet 1 of 8 illustrates (timber) door - head lining 10 (without door head stop) with special rebated underside profile and step return 12 in approx.
line of maximum 24 door leaf 25 thickness, fonning "step - up" beyond door leaf thickness to seating face 14, this being the extent of the "square cut" stile linings 10 and vertical door - stops 20 when the hatched segment 13 is removed at both ends of the frame head 10 (see isometric sheet 2/8 and 4/8) to receive the door frame / lining thickness. The ends of both the hanging and closing stiles (door - frame / lining + stops) must be "square - cut" to "reverse" seat with either door lining head or finished floor level. Similarly the butt hinges 16 and striking plate 17 must be positioned equi - distant from stile 15 ends. The head lining step return 12 combined with door leaf head clearance 21 n.ust equate with base door leaf clearance 22 for optimum reversibility.
The pre - machined door leaf 25 is fitted to the hanging stile with "non handed" butt hinges such that the "stile ends" project equal amounts beyond the top and bottom of the door leaf. This dimension, although normally produced to the Industry standard, can be varied to accommodate specific floor finish thicknesses + clearances. The striking plate (latch / lock box) is centrally positioned in the closing stile for reversibility and of sufficient depth to accept "reversed" latch / lock furniture with reversible tongues, fitted centrally in the door - leaf height
A threshold strip can be incorporated without invalidating reversibility/ dual handing.
Sheet 3 of 8 illustrates the jamb detail, in which the stiles may be door linings with factory applied door stops or alternatively door - frame stiles with integral door stops.
The stile linings may be of identical profile as the head lining 10 but with applied door stops 20 located in rebate 12.
[ PANEL D ]
Sheet 4 of 8 shows an elevation of the non - assembled door lining I stop components only.
Sheet 5 of 8 shows an elevation of an assembled single - action doorset complete with single door leaf.
Sheets 6 of 8 and 7 of 8 illustrate examples of how "dual handed" doorsets with rebated head linings in extruded aluminium 30 or rolled steel 40 respectively, can be achieved by identical method, using different material choices.
Common to all head linings in different materials is a groove in the lining soffite above the door leaf head to accept a sound seal / intumescent fire seal 11 component as required.
It can be seen that by virtue of the product invention, suited doorsets in a range of materials and all capable of full DUAL HANDING can be developed, as well as many permutations of interchangeable door stop (applied) 20 profiles which will fit within the "common" rebate profile 12 of door stile linings in a range of material options.
The kev features of the special rebated, grooved and "end conditioned"
HEAD LINING soffite to the illustrated configuration as well as the method by which it performs, being the inventive step enabling prefabricated and pre - finished doorsets to be "dual handed" with door leaf clearance differentials at head and base.
