Abstract

This invention provides a method of forming a stone article having a periphery that is at least partically curved, the method comprising forming a stone article preferably having an external generally rectangular configuration; and profiling the article as desired using a milling wheel having the desired profile, the profiled wheel being stationary during profiling. Such stones are useful in the formation of worry stones.

Description

METHOD OP FORMING PROFILED STONE ARTICLES This invention relates to a method of forming profiled stone articles. In particular, it relates to an improved method for the mass production of profiled stone articles.
The conventional method used in the formation of profiled stone articles involves grinding each individual article manually to the desired shape on a rough, abrasive belt. This method is extremely time-consuming and is therefore not cost effective for the large-scale production of shaped stone articles.
It is an object of the invention to alleviate this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of forming a stone article having a periphery that is at least partially curved, the method comprising forming a stone article having a suitable configuration, especially an external generally rectangular configuration; and profiling the article as desired using a milling wheel having the desired profile, the profiled wheel being stationary during profiling.
The stone is preferably marble, more preferably Connemara marble or Kilkenny marble, and most preferably Connemara marble. 367433 The stone article is preferably releasably retained in a rotatable jig having two spaced apart profiles which are different from one another. One of the profiles is preferably substantially semi-elliptical in plan and the other profile is preferably substantially u-shaped in plan having a base and two spaced apart side walls extending vertically therefrom.
The profiled stone article formed according to the invention preferably has a substantially elliptical configuration in plan. The profiled article of the invention is preferably used in the formation of worry stones .
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the steps involved in the profiling of a stone article.
Slabs of Connemara marble are cut into rectangular articles 10 measuring 5 cmx 3.5 cmx 0.5 cm. A single article is clamped in a jig 20 h aving two profiled ends 21 and 22. The article 10 is clamped at the end 21 which is substantially u-shaped in plan having a base and two spaced apart side walls extending vertically therefrom. The free end of the article 10 is offered to a conventional profiled diamond wheel (not shown) which has been profiled to produce substantially semi-elliptical shapes. The free end of the article 10 is then profiled to produce an article 10a which has been profiled at one end to a substantially semi-elliptical configuration. The article 10a is removed from the jig 20. The jig 20 is then turned around so that the end 21 is remote from the profiled diamond wheel. The article 10a is secured at its profiled end in the end 22 of the jig 20, the end 22 having a substantially semi-elliptical profile to enable clamping of the article 10a. The article 10a is then offered to the profiled diamond wheel for profiling. The resulting profiled article 10b has a generally elliptical configuration in plan. The profiled diamond wheel remains stationary throughout the procedure.
Where a large number of articles 10 are to be profiled, one end of each article 10 is profiled initially. The jig 20 is then turned around so that the profiled end may be secured and the other end profiled.
The invention thus provides a new method for profiling stone articles which is easy and inexpensive to carry out and allows profiling on a commercial scale.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described herein which may be modified or varied without departing from the scope of the invention.

CLAIMS :
1. A method of forming a stone article having a periphery that is at least partially curved, the method comprising forming a stone article having a suitable configuration, especially an external generally rectangular configuration; and profiling the article as desired using a milling wheel having the desired profile, the profiled wheel being stationary during profiling.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the stone is marble, preferably Connemara marble or Kilkenny marble.
3. A method according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the stone article to be profiled is releasably retained in a rotatable jig having two spaced apart profiles which are different from one another, one of which is preferably substantially semi-elliptical in plan and the other preferably being substantially u-shaped in plan having a base and two spaced apart side walls extending vertically therefrom.
4. A method according to any of claims 1-3, wherein the resulting profiled stone article has a substantially elliptical configuration in plan.
5. A method of forming a stone article having a periphery that is at least partially curved, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
