Description
The invention relates to cladding systems and in particular to cladding systems for structural members.
According to the invention there is provided a cladding system for a structural member comprising a first bracket means for mounting to the structural member, a second bracket means for mounting to the first bracket means and an outer cladding member which is mounted to the second bracket means, the first bracket means having first adjustment means and the second bracket means having second adjustment means to accommodate adjustment of the cladding member in at least two directions relative to the structural member for positioning and alinement of the cladding member, in use.
In one embodiment of the invention the two directions are respectively substantially parallel to and transverse of the longitudinal axis of the structural member.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the first bracket means is fixedly mounted to the structural member and the cladding member is fixedly mounted to the second bracket means, the adjustment means being provided between the first and second bracket means.
- 2 In one embodiment of the invention each adjustment means comprises an elongate slot means in the respective bracket means to accommodate a fixing element such as a fixing bolt.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the cladding means 5 extends around the structural element. Preferably the cladding means comprises means comprises a number of cladding elements which form in use a generally box shaped cladding around the structural member.
Preferably there are four cladding elements namely front and rear cladding elements and a pair of side cladding elements interconnecting the front and rear cladding elements.
In another embodiment of the invention there are two first and second bracket means which are associated with either the front and rear cladding elements or the side cladding elements, the other pair of cladding elements being mounted to the pair of cladding elements which are mounted directly to the second bracket means.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the joint between adjacent cladding elements is recessed and the recess is covered by a gasket means. The gasket material may be of a suitable elastomeric, particularly rubber material.
- 3 In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the bracket means are of generally channel-shape in transverse cross section. Preferably the bracket means are formed by pressing and folding of a suitable material.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the first bracket means is of generally C-shape in plan view having a central limb which is attached to a structural member and a pair of side limbs to which the second bracket means is mounted.
In another embodiment of the invention the second bracket 10 means is of generally channel-shape in transverse cross section having a base to which a cladding element is mounted and a pair of side limbs to one of which the first bracket means is mounted.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the 15 following description thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Fig. 1 is a perspective partially cross sectional view of part of a cladding system according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view showing some details of the cladding system,
- 4 Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view of portion of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of part of a structural assembly incorporating the cladding system of the invention, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of part of the structural assembly of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a cladding system according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 which forms part of a structural assembly only portion of which is illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. The cladding system 1 is used for cladding a structural member, in this case a structural beam 10 of I shape in transverse cross section. The cladding system comprises a pair of first bracket means 11 which are mounted by a backing plate 15 and fixing bolts 16 to opposite faces of the web of the structural member 10. A pair of second bracket means 12 are mounted by means of an adjustment means indicated generally by the reference numeral 13 to the first bracket means 11. Front and rear cladding elements 19, 20 respectively are bolted to the second bracket means 12 and a pair of side cladding elements 21, 22 are mounted by means of fixing elements 25 to the front and rear cladding elements 19, 20 as will be particularly apparent from Figs. 2 and 3. The cladding elements 19, 20,
- 5 21, 22 form a box-shaped cladding around the structural member
.
In more detail the first bracket means 11 is formed by pressing and folding a single sheet of suitable material such as stainless or mild steel into a generally C-shape in plan view having a central limb 30 which is fixed to the structural member 10 by the backing plate 15 which is welded to the base of the limb 30 and is fixed in position by the fixing screws 16, and a pair of side limbs 31, 32 which extend outwardly from the central limb 30 for mounting to the first bracket means 12. Each of the limbs 30, 31, 32 of the first bracket means 11 is of generally channel-shape in transverse cross section for improved structural strength.
Each of the second bracket means 12 is also of generally channel-shape in transverse cross section and has a base web to which the front and rear cladding elements 19, 20 are mounted and inwardly extending side flanges 35 to which the first bracket means 11 is mounted.
The adjustment means 13 for adjustably connecting the second bracket means 12 to the first bracket means 11 comprises an elongate slot 40 provided adjacent the free ends of the outwardly extending limbs 31, 32 of the first bracket means and an elongate slot 41 formed in the side flanges of the second bracket means 12. The slot 41 is aligned substantially
- 6 with the elongate slot 40 in the first bracket means in use, and a fixing bolt 45 extends between the slots 40, 41 when the cladding system is assembled on site. The elongate slot means 40, 41 extend generally parallel to and respectively transverse to the longitudinal axis of the structural member 10 to accommodate adjustment of the cladding elements 19, 20 in at least the longitudinal and transverse directions with respect to the structural member 10 for positioning an alignment of the cladding elements in use.
It will be noted that the joint between adjacent cladding elements 19, 20, 21, 22 is recessed at 49 and that the recess 49 is covered with a gasket 50 to prevent ingress of moisture and dirt into the recess 49 and to protect the fixing element 25 and the integrity of the cladding system in use.
The cladding system of Figs. 1 to 3 may be used to clad any desired structural assembly such as a portion of the structural assembly illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 additional gaskets 55 being provided between the cladding system at changes of direction.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in both construction and detail.
