Abstract

A seal for sealing a joint between a discharge collar of a stove and a flue pipe through which high temperature gases are discharged to the atmosphere comprises a folded 5 flexible liner coated internally with a layer of heat insulation material comprising a layer of silicone sealant.

Description

STOVE SEALING APPARATUS FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a method and apparatus for sealing a joint between an outlet collar of a stove and a flue or outlet pipe through which exhaust gasses are discharged. More especially, the invention relates a method and apparatus for sealing the joint between a collar through which exhaust gases leave a stove, and a flue or outlet pipe through which high temperature exhaust gases are discharged to the atmosphere.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION High temperature exhaust gases are generally discharged from a stove such as a solid fuel, gas or wood burner, furnace or the like (referred to below as a "stove" for ease of understanding) to the atmosphere via a flue pipe connected to an open—ended collar of the stove.
Conventionally, the joint between the stove collar and the flue pipe is sealed by means of a layer of cement or silicone located between the opposed surfaces of the collar and the flue pipe.
Whereas such a seal is effective when applied, it has been found to deteriorate and crack over a relatively short period of time with the result that exhaust gases are not effectively discharged and pollute the atmosphere in the vicinity of the stove.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to the present application in one aspect, the invention, provides a Inethodr of sealing' the joint ibetween, a discharge collar of a stove and a flue pipe through which high temperature gases are exhausted to the atmosphere, the method comprising the steps of locating a folded flexible liner open on its uppermost edge between the opposed. surfaces of the discharge collar and the flue, and injecting silicone sealant into the space between the folded layers of flexible liner to form a layer of sealant which extends around the entire circumference of the flexible liner and seals the entire space between the collar and the flue pipe.
The liner preferably comprises a ceramic paper or cloth.
The thickness of the flexible liner is preferably between 2.5 and 3.5mm; more preferably 3mm.
Preferably the side of the folded liner which lies in contact with the surface of the outlet pipe is positioned above the other side of the folded liner which lies in contact with the internal surface of the collar.
According to the invention in another aspect, the invention provides a seal for sealing a joint between a discharge collar of a stove and an open end of a flue pipe through which high temperature gases are discharged from the stove to the atmosphere, the apparatus comprising a folded flexible liner of a length at least equal to the height of the collar which, in use, is to be inserted into the space between the opposed surfaces of the pipe and the flue with the fold of the liner lowermost, and, a silicone sealant whichr ,in use, is to be inserted as a layer between the folded sides of the flexible liner.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a folded flexible liner of approximately 3mm, thickness is inserted. into the annular space defined between the internal face of an upstanding open—ended exhaust collar of the stove and the adjacent external face of a flue pipe through which high temperature gases are discharged from the stove.
The flexible liner preferably comprises ceramic paper or cloth coated with a coating layer of heat insulation material.
The folded liner is positioned with its open end uppermost.
Once in position, silicone sealant is injected via a suitable dispenser into the space defined by the folded walls of the liner. The injection process continues until the injected silicone completely fills the space defined by the inner sides of the folded lining. In this way, the outer surfaces of the lining are urged into firm contact with the opposed sides of the collar and the flue to define, a long lasting and effective seal between the collar and the flue pipe.
In a preferred embodiment, the height of the side of the folded liner which lies in contact with the exhaust gas outlet pipe is greater than the other side of the liner which, in use, lies in contact with the collar.
The presence of the liner substantially extends the useful life of the seal by preventing cracking of the silicone sealant.
In tests conducted by the Applicant, a seal as described was subjected in situ to a 700 degrees centigrade flame for a period in excess of 20 minutes with no evidence of deterioration.
It will be understood that the foregoing is merely exemplary of a method and apparatus in accordance with the invention for sealing a stove and an outlet flue through which exhaust gasses are discharged to the atmosphere, and that modifications can readily be made thereto without departing from the true scope of the invention as set out in the appended claims.
O CLAIMS A method of sealing the joint between a discharge collar of a stove and a flue pipe through which high temperature gasses are exhausted to the atmosphere, the method comprising the steps of locating a folded flexible liner coated with a layer of heat insulation material and open on its uppermost edge between the opposed surfaces of the discharge collar and the flue pipe, and injecting a layer of silicone sealant into the space between. the folded layers of flexible liner to form a layer of sealant which extends around the entire circumference of the flexible liner and seals the entire space between the collar and the flue pipe.
.A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the liner comprises a ceramic paper or cloth.
.A method as claimed in claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the thickness of the flexible liner is between 2.5 and 3.5mm.
.A method as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the thickness of the flexible liner is 3mm.
.A Hethod as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the side of the folded liner which lies in contact with the surface of the flue pipe is positioned above the side of the folded liner which lies in contact with the internal surface of the collar A seal for sealing a joint between a discharge collar of a stove and an open end of a flue pipe through which high
