Abstract

To determine the velocity of acoustic wave energy propagating in formations surrounding a borehole (14), a transmitter (16) periodically transmits acoustic wave energy into the surrounding formations. This energy is received at a plurality of spaced receivers (18.1-18.4). A first portion of the signal from the receiver 18.1 is then correlated with respective first portions of the signals from the other receivers (18.2-18.4) the time reference for the correlation of each of the first portions of the signals from the other receivers (18.2-18.4) being selected, relative to the time reference of the signal from the receiver 18.1, in accordance with the spacing of the receivers (18.1-18.4) and a first estimated velocity. The correlation is repeated for four more estimated velocities, and a velocity value which yields the best correlation is selected by interpolation as a first provisional velocity. The correlation for several assumed velocities and interpolation is then performed on second portions of the signals from the receivers (18.1-18.4) to obtain a second provisional velocity. An output velocity is then determined as a function of the first and second (and possibly other similarly-generated) provisional velocities. The velocity of the compressional component and/or the shear component of the acoustic wave energy can be obtained. <IMAGE> [GB2012422A]
