Abstract
9-Hydroxyethoxymethylguanine derivatives of the formula I are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula II with a phosphorylating agent. The resulting compound of the formula I in which W and Z both denote hydrogen can be reacted with a base containing the desired cation or with a corresponding salt to give a compound of the formula I in which W and/or Z denote a pharmaceutically acceptable cation. The compounds of the formula I can also be prepared by the processes indicated in Claims 11 and 15. The compounds of the formula I are active against viruses, in particular against different types of DNA and RNA viruses. <IMAGE>
