Abstract

The invention relates to a deodorant for liquid manure. This substance comprises an undecenoic acid ester. It represents an effective odour-masking substance right from the storage of the liquid manure and can be spread particularly easily.

Description

The invention relates to a deodorant substance for liquid manures, in particular liquid manures from pigs.
Intensive agriculture is a significant source of noxious waste, the animal production sector, with dejecta, being a non-negligible component. Pig stocks alone generate significant amounts of liquid manure which, apart from the pollution problems caused, are sources of odour nuisance both during stock rearing (collection) and during its storage, its treatment and its dispersal.
Several deodorant systems are used. These systems are oriented towards reducing the odour, and also the pollutant constituents.
Not all stock rearing makes use of these means; the majority proceed with dispersal after storage.
Amongst the deodorant techniques, trickling through a bacterial bed is virtually no longer used and three systems predominate: surface aeration, blowing in air and methanisation.
The present invention provides a substance which absorbs the odours of liquid manures, the said substance being a polyoxyalkylene ester of undecylenic acid.
Amongst these products, the use of the polyoxyethylene, polyoxypropylene and poly(oxyethylene)(oxypropylene) esters of the said undecylenic acid is preferred, especially the polyoxyalkylene esters containing from 2 to 10 oxyalkylene units.
The absorbent substance used in the invention may consist of one of the abovementioned products on its own or of a mixture of the said products; they can be used as such or in the form of, say, a solution or suspension or, alternatively, adsorbed on a carrier, such as clay particles.
In general, the undecylenic esters are effective at a very low dosage, for example from 0.01 to 1 % relative to the weight of the mass to be treated.
It is, of course, possible to form compositions comprising the abovementioned undecylenic ester or esters and additives such as bacteriostatic agents or fungicides and undecylenic acid itself.
The incorporation of the abovementioned ester is generally reflected in the formation, at the surface of the material to be treated, of a film which eliminates the emanation of odour.
The accompanying Figures illustrate the efficacy of certain polyoxyethylene esters of undecylenic acid.
In these Figures, the abscissa axis represents the amount of the undecylenic ester used, the ordinate axis representing the degree of olfactory perception of the odour, the values 1 to 6 signifying, respectively: none, very weak, weak, average, strong and very strong.
In these Figures, the upper graph corresponds to the odour of the liquid manure itself, the lower graph corresponding to the odour of the ester.
Figures 1 and 2 correspond, respectively, to the polyoxyethylene esters of undecylenic acid containing 8 and oxyethylene units. These show that the reduction in the perception of the odour of the liquid manure is not significantly replaced by the perception of an odour associated with the ester itself.
By way of comparison, Figures 3 and 4 show that 10 with, respectively, methyl undecylenate and the polyoxyethylene ester containing 12 oxyethylene units, the reduction in the perception of the odour of the liquid manure is significantly replaced by a strong perception of the odour of the undecylenic ester.
