Abstract

As disclosed in GE 2241529A, support blocks (not shown) are secured to the lower horizontal limb of a window frame 11 and these blocks and a glazing strip 15 have interlocking formations which secure the glazing strip 15, which carries a gasket 18 which effects a seal between a window pane 13 and the glazing strip 15 and biases the latter away from the window pane and into a position which renders the interlocking between the support blocks and the glazing strip 15 effective. The glazing strip here has a protective coating all over its surface except at its extreme end faces, which have been produced by cutting a long length of coated extrusion. These end faces are protected by inserting them in end caps 22 having parts in the form of channels. Upwardly extending lugs on the end caps hold beading 19 out of contact with the glazing strip 15.

Description

A Glazing Assembly United Kingdom Patent Specification No. 2241529Ά discloses a glazing assembly comprising a window frame, a window pane within the frame, support means within the frame secured to a lover horizontal limb of the frame adjacent the window pane, a glazing strip secured to the support means by interlocking formations on the glazing strip end support means and a gasket carried by the glazing strip and pressing on the window pane to effect a seal between the window pane and the glazing strip, the gasket serving also to bias the glazing strip towards a position in which said formations on the glazing strip and support means interlock.
According to the present invention, such a glazing assembly is characterised in that the glazing strip has been made by extruding a long length of material, giving its surface a protective coating and then cutting it into shorter lengths, the end faces of which lack the protective coating, one of the shorter lengths being said glazing strip, end caps being attached to the ends of the glazing strip to protect its end face.
The invention solves the problem that if the glazing strip is one of several or many shorter lengths cut from a long length of extruded material vhich has been given a protective coating over its entire surface prior to the cutting operation, the two end faces of the glazing strip will lack the protective coating and will eventually corrode, if not protected in some way.
Preferably the glazing strip is an anodised powder-coated extrusion and the end caps are of hard plastics material. The end caps are preferably push-fitted on the glazing strip. The support means are preferably spaced-apart blocks, as disclosed in Specification No. 2241529A.
Wooden or other beading strips may be secured to the vertical limbs of the window frame adjacent the window pane and the lower ends of the beading strips may be held out of contact with the glazing strip by upwardly-extending lugs on the end caps.
Examples in accordance with the invention are described below vith reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of part of a glazing assembly; Figures 2 and 2A show two side elevations of an end cap in the assembly; Figures 3 and 4 show perspective views of the same end cap of one end of a glazing strip, before and after fitting the end cap on it; and Figures 5 and 6 show views, corresponding to those of Figures 2 and 2A, of a second form of end cap, although this is shown in the orientation which it has when in use.
Figure 1 shows a wooden window frame 11 to the lower horizontal limb of which polypropylene support blocks (not shown) within the frame are secured as disclosed in Specification No. 2241529A. An elongate glazing strip 15, one of several produced by cutting a long length of extruded and anodised aluminium into shorter lengths, has uncoated end faces 24. The strip 15 has two limbs 16 and 17 inclined to one another by an angle between 90’ and 180’ and the limb 17 has a downward extension 17A which carries a gasket 18 which presses on the outer surface 12 of the outer pane 13 of a double glazing unit held within the frame 11. A leg 10 and the downward extension 17A on the strip 15, on the one hand, and the support blocks, on the other hand, have interlocking formations (not shown) and the strip 15 is biased away from the window pane 13, into a position where these interlocking formations are effective, by the gasket. The limbs 16 and 17 are joined by a rounded portion 15A.
End caps 22 are push-fitted on the ends 24 of the glazing strip 15, these caps being of hard plastics material and including parts in the form of channels 23 with their strip receiving portions facing one another. Each channel has two limbs 30 and 31, making an angle between 90’ and 180’, joined by a rounded portion 32, to match the cross-section of the strip 15. The two opposite walls 33 and 34 of the channel 23 are of the same height, measured from the floor 35 of the channel to the tip 36 of the wall, but the wall 34, on the inside of the angle formed by the limbs 30 and 31, is shorter than the wall 33, on the outside of that angle, so that a space 37 is left through which the leg 10 passes. A lug 25 on each end cap projects upwardly and towards the window pane 13. The lug 25 prevents the lower end of wooden beading 19, secured to the vertical limbs of the frame 11 by screws 20, touching the strip 15, which would cause water retention and eventual deterioration. The beading carries a gasket 21 which presses on the window pane 13 to provide another seal.
The assembly shown in Figure 1 may include end caps as shown in Figures 5 and 6, which are like those described above, except that the two walls 33 and 34 of the channel are of substantially equal length and the inner wall 34 is of greater height than the outer wall 33 except in a part 34A near the window pane, where the two walls are of equal height. There is an opening 39 through the wall 34, extending from the floor 35 of the channel to the tip of the wall 34, through which the leg 10 passes.

CLAIMS:
1. A glazing assembly comprising a window frame, a window pane within the frame, support means within the frame secured to a lower horizontal limb of the frame adjacent the window pane, a glazing strip secured to the support means by interlocking formations on the glazing strip end support means and a gasket carried by the glazing strip and pressing on the window pane to effect a seal between the window pane and the glazing strip, the gasket serving also to bias the glazing strip towards a position in which said formations on the glazing strip and support means interlock, characterised in that the glazing strip has been made by extruding a long length of material, giving its surface a protective coating and then cutting it into shorter lengths, the end faces of which lack the protective coating, one of the shorter lengths being said glazing strip, end caps being attached to the ends of the glazing strip to protect its end face.
2. An assembly according to Claim 1 in which each end cap has a part in the form of a channel for receiving the glazing strip, the channel having two limbs, forming one side wall of the channel and inclined to one another by an angle between 90’ and 180’ and having a curved piece joining the two limbs together, the two end caps having the strip receiving portions of the channels facing one another and the end caps having been placed on the ends of the glazing strip so that each of the two opposite end portions of the glazing strip lie between the opposite walls of a respective one of the channels.
3. An assembly according to Claim 2 in which part of that wall of each channel which is on the inside of the angle is taller than the corresponding part of that wall which is on the outside of the angle.
4. An assembly accordingly to Claim 2 or 3 in which that wall of each channel which is on the inside of the angle has an opening through it, extending from the floor of the channel to the tip of the wall, through which passes a leg provided on the glazing strip to assist in the locking of the glazing strip to the support means.
5. An assembly according to Claim 4 as appended to Claim 3 in which the opening is in said part of the inside wall.
6. An assembly according to any preceding claim in which beading strips are secured to the vertical limbs of the window frame adjacent the window pane and the lower ends of the beading strips are held spaced from the glazing strip by upwardly extending lugs on the end caps.
