Abstract

An installation gauge for door weather seals comprises a flat plate 10 having a straight edge 11 and a plurality of holes 12, 13 in the plate each at a different predetermined distance from the straight edge. The plate 10 has a further edge 16 at right angles to the straight edge, and the further edge has a plurality of grooves 17, 18 therein each associated with a respective hole, each groove and the respective hole lying on a line parallel to the straight edge.

Description

This invention relates to an installation gauge for door weather seals.
There are several types of weather seals available which in use are fitted around a door frame just in front of the surface of the closed door, and which carry a sealing gasket which seals against the door surface when the door is closed.
Clearly, such a weather seal must be fitted within close tolerances, since if it is too far away from the door surface the gasket will not make proper sealing contact with the door, whereas if it is too close extreme pressure is required to close the door and unnecessary deformation and/or compression of the gasket can occur, leading to damage.
It is, therefore, an object of the invention to provide a gauge which eliminates these problems by providing for the installer the correct position on the door frame for a number of specific weather seals.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an installation gauge for weather seals comprising a flat plate having a straight edge, first and second holes through the plate, at first and second differing predetermined distances, respectively, from the straight edge, and first and second apertures through the plate, at said first and second distances, respectively, from the straight edge, each of the first and second apertures opening at another edge of the plate.
The distance of each hole from the straight edge corresponds to the distance from a closed door surface at which a different specific weather seal should be fitted, the gauge in use being slid around the door frame with the straight edge in contact with the surface of the door and with a pencil or ball point pen in a selected hole to thereby mark on the door frame the correct position of the corresponding weather seal.
In order to accommodate marking instruments other than a pen or pencil, for example a carpenter’s pencil or the edge of a chisel, the plate has the two apertures, both preferably opening at the same further straight edge at right angles to the first-mentioned straight edge. The apertures preferably each reduce in width, progressingly inwardly from the edge at which it opens. Preferably first and second straight lines on one face of the plate join the first hole to the first aperture and the second hole to the second aperture.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which is a plan view of an installation gauge. - 3 The gauge is in the form of a 2mm thick aluminium plate 10 of overall dimensions approximately 50mm by 29mm. The plate 10 has a straight edge 11 and two circular holes 12, 13 are formed through the plate each at a different predetermined distance from the straight edge 11.
The distance of each hole 12 and 13 from the straight edge 11 corresponds to the distance from a closed door surface at which a different specific weather seal should be fitted, the particular type of weather seal of which each hole relates being identified adjacent each hole as at 14, 15, respectively. Each hole 12 and 13 is about 2mm in diameter so as to accommodate the point of a pencil or ball point pen.
In use the gauge is slid around the door frame with the straight edge 11 in contact with the surface of the door and with a pencil or ball point pen in a selected hole 12 or 13 to thereby mark on the door frame a line indicating the correct position of the corresponding weather seal.
In order to permit marking by instruments other than a pen or pencil, for example a carpenter’s pencil or the edge of a chisel which are too large to fit in the holes 12 and 13, the plate 10 has a further straight edge 16 at right angles to the straight edge 11, the further edge 16 having two apertures through the plate opening thereat, the apertures being in the form of V-shaped grooves 17, 18 in the edge 16. Each groove is associated with a respective hole 12, 13, each groove and the respective hole lying on a notional or actual marked straight line 19, 20 parallel to the - 4 straight edge 11.
To facilitate sliding of the plate around the door frame the holes 12 and 13 are slightly countersunk at least on the underneath face of the plate, as indicated at 21, 22. The plate also has a series of serrations 30 to facilitate gripping.

CLAIMS:
1. An installation gauge for weather seals comprising a flat plate having a straight edge, first and second holes through the plate at first and second 5 differing predetermined distances, respectively, from the straight edge, and first and second apertures through the plate, at said first and second distances, respectively, from the straight edge, each of the first and second apertures opening at another edge of the 10 plate.
2. An installation gauge as claimed in claim 1, wherein the plate has a further straight edge at a right-angle to the straight edge mentioned in claim 1, and the further straight edge has both said apertures 15 opening thereat.
3. An installation gauge as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein each hole is countersunk on at least one face of the plate.
4. An installation gauge as claimed in any 20 preceding claim, wherein each hole has a diameter of about 2mm. 5. An installation gauge as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein each aperture reduces in width, progressing inwardly from the edge at which it 25 opens. 6. An installation gauge as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein first and second straight lines are present on one face of the plate parallel to - 6 the straight edge mentioned in claim 1, the first line joining the first hole to the first aperture and the second line joining the second hole to the second aperture.
5. 7. An installation gauge substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
