Abstract
A book covering sheet 1 comprises a roll of transparent plastics material 2 having a strip of adhesive adjacent each longitudinal side edge covered by a peel-off strip 4. To form the covering material into a wallet the material is cut to a pre-set length and cut and folded about top, bottom and side fold lines 16 and a central fold line 17. The flaps thus formed are folded over and bonded together by removing the peel off strip 4 from the adhesive to form a wallet. The adhesive may extend transversely across the sheet. A number of spaced-apart longitudinally and/or transversely extending adhesive strips may be provided.
Description
One of the major problems in the use of books is to ensure that the outer cover is not damaged either due to normal wear and tear or by, for example, somebody spilling something on the cover. Thus, many people cover their books with wrapping paper, transparent cellophane and other plastics material.
Such an operation is, however, time consuming and requires a reasonable modicum of skill so that many people are unable to do it successfully.
The present invention is directed towards overcoming these problems .
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a method of covering a book comprising the steps of:15 providing a sheet of covering material having strips of adhesive extending longitudinally adjacent to longitudinal lateral edges of the sheets laying a book down on the sheet with the spine of ths book extending transversely between but spaced-apart from the lateral edges of the sheet, the area of the sheet between the book covers and the lateral edges of the sheet defining upper and lower flap portions;
cutting away part of the upper and lower flap portions in the region of the spine of the book, folding the upper and lower flap portions over the upper and lower free edges of the front and hack covers of the hooky and bonding the adhesive strips to the book covers.
A second aspect of the invention provides a method of forming 5 a covering wallet from a sheet of covering material having strips of adhesive extending longitudinally adjacent to the longitudinal lateral edges of the sheet, the method comprising the steps of:cutting the covering sheet material to a pre-set length 10 to define first and second lateral edges and first and second transverse edges;
defining at least one central fold line parallel to and intermediate the transverse edges;
cutting the sheet along part of the at least one fold 15 line from the lateral edges;
cutting out a portion of the sheet adjacent each corner;
folding the sheet along a fold line parallel to and adjacent each transverse edge;
folding the sheet along fold lines parallel to the 20 lateral edges; and exposing sufficient of the adhesive to form a covering wallet.
The invention also provides a covering wallet when made hy the method of this second aspect.
In one embodiment of the invention the adhesive extends substantially the length of a roll from which the sheet is cut.
Preferably the cover includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced-apart transverse adhesive strip extending at least partially between the longitudinal edges of the covering material.
The adhesive strip may be divided into a number of longitudinally and/or transversely spaced-apart adhesive strip sections .
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the adhesive is covered by a peel-off strip. Preferably the peeloff strip extends substantially the length and width of the adhesive strip.
Preferably the covering material is transparent.
Preferably the covering material is a plastics material.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a book covering sheet for use with the method according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view in the direction of arrows II-II of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view of portion of the sheet.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sheet in use.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cut sheet showing the cutting and folding lines.
Fig. 6 is a view of the sheet with the cut-out operation performed.
Figs» 7 to 9 are perspective views from above of the book covering or wallet formed and in use.
Referring to the drawings there is provided a book covering sheet indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 formed from an elongated roll of binding material 2 such as a transparent plastics material, adjacent each longitudinal lateral edge of which is placed a strip of adhesive 3 covered by a peel-off strip 4. The strip 4 may be in short sections to facilitate the exposure of as much adhesive as is required.
To provide the book cover in the form of a wallet the binding material 2 is cut into a sheet as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 and identified by the reference numeral 10 which defines top and bottom lateral edges 11, 12 and transverse edges 13. All fold lines are illustrated by interrupted lines and cuts by full lines in the drawings. In turn, top, bottom and transverse fold lines 14, 15 and 16 respectively are marked out or otherwise formed. Central fold lines 17 are formed. Cut-outs 18 are made along each central fold line 17 as are corner cut-outs shown by the full lines IS at each corner. The cut-out sheet 10 is shown in Fig. 6 where there is now defined central portions 20 and 21, side flaps 22 and 23, top flaps 24 and 25 and bottom flaps 26 and 27. The two side flaps 22 and 23 respectively are folded over about the fold lines IS as illustrated in Figs. 7 to 9 in which a covered book is indicated by the reference numeral 30. Part of the backing strip 4 is removed and the top flap 24 is folded about β
the fold line 14 over the side flap 22. The other top flap and bottom flaps are folded over about the respective fold lines to form a wallet. Depending on how much of the adhesive has been exposed the wallet can be firmly secured to the book cover or alternatively it can be easily removed.
S
It will be appreciated that the sheet may be formed from any suitable material including paper.
It will also be appreciated that in some cases the adhesive may extend at least partially transversely across the sheet.
A number of spaced-apart longitudinally and/or transversely extending adhesive strips may be provided.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment hereinbefore described but may be varied in constructional details.
