Abstract

Apparatus for assembling gutters of a plastics material includes a jig 10. A length of gutter is clamped in each of the clamps 12 and 14. A heater plate is held between the ends of the gutter until the material begins to melt. The heater plate is removed and the clamp 12 is moved towards the clamp 14 using handle 22 and screw 20 until the ends of the gutters engage to form a fusion weld. <IMAGE>

Description

The present invention relates to improvements in gutters for roofs. The invention also relates to a method of assembling gutters and to an apparatus for assembling gutters.
Gutters manufactured from plastics materials, > such as unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, have been in use for many years· A number of gutter profiles are available such as half-round, semi-elliptical, flat bottomed and ’Ogee' style. Some of these gutters may be joined using a mechanical spigot and socket joint, such as is described in British Patent Specification No. 911,851, whilst other gutters having a more complex profile may only be joined using solvent welding techniques.
Mechanical jointing and solvent welding of gutters, when properly executed, provide excellent watertight joints. Mechanical jointing and solvent welding may be considered as semi-Skilled operations and thus are prone to human error.
The present invention provides a method of joining gutters of a plastics material, such as 09 unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, the method comprising •ή I the following stepss (1) placing two lengths of gutter in an end to end adjacent position; (2) clamping the lengths of gutter; (3) applying heat to the adjacent gutter ends e so ae to partially melt the material; and (4) bringing said ends together under pressure so as fo form a fusion weld between the lengths of gutter, without distorting th© gutter profile The invention also provides apparatus for joining gutters of a plastics material, Such as unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, the apparatus comprising means for supporting two lengths of gutter in an end fo end adjacent position, clamping means for clamping the lengths of gutter so as to prevent distortion of the gutter profile, heating means adapted to be moved info and out of position between the ends of the gutter lengths so as to partially melt said ends and means for applying pressure to the gutter lengths to enable said ends to form a fusion weld without distorting the gutter profile· The invention further provides guttering for a building, comprising lengths of gutters joined ©nd fo end «*. by fusion welding so as to form a continuous gutter· The apparatus according to the invention includes a jig for holding and clamping lengths of gutters in an end fo end adjacent position without distorting the gutter profit©« A heating device may be shoved into and out of position between the ends of the clamped gutter lengths. When the ends of the gutter lengths have been melted sufficiently to form a fusion weld, the heating is removed and the gutter lengths are brought together under pressure to form a fusion weld. The welded gutter is then unclamped and the weld cleaned to make it invisible.
* Successive lengths of gutters are welded on using the same procedure until the required length of gutter is formed.
J The apparatus may be used for on-site assembly 10 of gutters. The operating temperature, clamping pressures, dwell time and welding pressures' may be pre-set and controlled by a microprocessor based unit.
The invention will hereinafter be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying 15 drawings, which show by way of example only, one embodiment of a jig which forms part of the apparatus according to the invention. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the jig? Figure 2 is a plan view of the jig? 20 Figure 3 is a side view Of the jig? Figure 4 is an end view of the jig; and Figure 5 is an underneath plan view.
Referring to the drawings, the jig comprises a frame 10, a fixed clamp 14 and a movable clamp 12 mounted 25 on a pair of rails 16« Blocks 18 secure the rails 16 to the frame 10. The clamp 12 is moved along the rails 16 by rotating the screw 20 using handle 22.
Each of the clamps 12 and 14 comprises a turntable 30 which is movable about the axis of a base plate 32. The turntable 30 is fixed relative fo the base plate 32 by a pin 34 engaging a hole in the turntable and one of a series of holes (not shown) in the base plate.
Thus the clamps 12 and 14 can be set for joining gutters at the desired angle.
Mounted on each turntable 30 is a frame 40 which supports a press 42 movable by rotating the screw 44« The press 42 is fitted with a contact plate 46 which corresponds to the shape of the gutters being joined. Different contact plates can be used for different shapes of gutters being joined.
In use a section of gutter (not shown) is clamped in each of the clamps 12 and 14. A heater plate (not shown) is placed between the two adjacents ends of the gutters and the clamp 12 is moved towards the clasp 14 by rotating the screw 20 until the heater plate is clamped between the ends of the gutters. When the ends of the gutters have melted sufficiently, the clamp 12 is moved away from the clamp 14 to alloy the heater to be removed.
The ends of the gutters are then brought into engagement under pressure by moving clamp 12 towards the clamp 14.
When the ends of the gutters have joined, the now joined Λ section of gutter is removed from the jigAlthough not shown in the drawings, the heater plate may be mounted on a pivotable arm secured to the frame 10.
