Description

J ο The invention relates to a top-unit for a single-action sanitary shut-off valve comprising a head-member which can be screwed into a standard-sized opening and can be sealed by means of an O-ring, and a spindle which engages in a 5 movable sealing member and causes the latter to move; the latter is furthermore mounted on a non-rotatable sealing member and at its outer circumference it is secured against rotation by means of projections; the non-rotatable sealing member is provided with openings for the passage of water, 10 the two sealing members being in sealing engagement with one another by means of sealing surfaces and the size of the water-passage being determined by adjustment to an appropriate angular position.
An article of this kind is known from European 15 Specification No. 80401052; this shows a tap for liquids which produces little noise and which comprises a cylindrical body with an outlet tube for the discharge of water and having an inner cylindrical surface to receive a first stationary disc having openings formed through it and having one side 20 serving for the admission of water and for receiving an actuating spindle which serves for rotating a second disc which is formed with outlet openings through it, the two discs being mounted on one another and determining by appropriate angular positions, the area available for the 25 passage of water. The inlet side of the stationary disc - 1 - has the form of a projecting V whose edges extend parallel to the inlet side, each outlet opening having an axis of symmetry which is contained in the plane perpendicular to the edge of the V. This has the disadvantage that the spindle is exposed to the pressure of the water and of the sealing-ring arrangement and this gives rise to difficulty in the movement of the spindle and in addition it runs under dry conditions; a further disadvantage is that the conical grid has its highest point in the immediate vicinity of the water-openings; if the tolerances are unfavourable, this may give rise to seizing of the discs. A further disadvantage is that in the unscrewed condition, this device does not hold together reliably and can therefore fall apart and, furthermore, when the device is screwed up tight, the sealing-ring arrangement may be deformed due to its length.
The object of the invention is to mitigate the above-mentioned disadvantages in a device of the kind referred to.
With this object in view, the invention provides an upper cartridge part for a sanitary single shut-off valve, comprising a head piece which can be screwed into a standard aperture and can be sealed by means of an O-ring, a spindle provided with an end journal bearing, a movable 5 sealing disc driven by the spindle, a fixedly arranged sealing disc, and a seal, arranged in the lower part of the head piece, which presses the sealing surfaces of the sealing discs against each other when the head piece is tightened, whereby the sealing discs are provided with water 10 apertures, and by adjustment of an appropriate angular position the water passage can be determined, wherein a) the end journal bearing of the spindle is mounted in a closed grease chamber, b) the sealing ring is retained between a coarse 15 filter and a thrust ring and is fixedly arranged in the head piece.
The invention makes it possible to construct a valve in which the interengaging surfaces of the spindle and the head member are - 3 - *J i- located in a grease-chamber which is wholly closed and is thus secure against the ingress from above of cleaning materials or the like. Moreover, for the purposes of sounddamping, the movable sealing member has a fabric insert 5 associated therewith and the non-rotatable and movable sealing members are provided with sealing surfaces and are held in place in a sealing manner by a sealing ring in conjunction with the water-pressure prevailing from time to time; and further, a coarse filter is 10 arranged in the lower part of the head-member for removing coarse particles of dirt and also, all the components are held in position by a retaining ring which is a push-fit and prevents the components from falling out, while the sealing ring is prevented from slipping outwards by the 15 retaining ring.
The grease-chamber is formed in a simple manner by two 0-rings and at the same time it is closed; this prevents the formation of calciferous deposits and prevents the ingress of cleaning materials from above and 20 furthermore, the bearing surface is permanently mounted in grease; in this way this can no longer become dry.
The fabric insert is preferably formed with filter-corrugations which engage perpendicularly in cutouts in the movable member and at the same time it is 25 centred in a recess in the spindle by means of a projection; 4 at the same time, the fabric insert engages by means of a depression, on the central portion of the movable sealing member.
In order to ensure effective engagement, the 5 sealing ring is provided on its end-faces with sealing lips of corrugated form.
The corrugations on the fabric insert are advantageously formed of such thickness that underneath, they bear against the edge of the non-10 rotatable sealing member so as to exclude the possibility of seizing of the members in the case of unfavourable tolerances.
Furthermore, it has been found to be advantageous for the movable sealing member to be 15 provided in its outer region with recesses to receive driving elements and furthermore with openings for the passage of water.
The non-rotatable sealing member is advantageously provided with openings for the passage of water; 20 moreover these are formed with sloping portions .
In this way, because the spindle receives the movable sealing member direct, all tolerances are substantially reduced. - 5 - 'i Ij The invention will be described in greater detail hereinafter, with reference to the accompanying drawings which show one embodiment by way of example.
In the drawings;- 5 Fig. 1 is a side view partly in section, showing a top-unit in accordance with the invention, for a single-action sanitary shut-off valve, in the assembled condition, Fig. 2 shows a movable sealing member according to the invention, viewed from above, 10 Fig. 3 shows a non-rotatable sealing member according to the invention, viewed from below, Fig. 4 shows the movable sealing member together with a fabric insert, viewed from below, Fig. 5 is a side view of the top-unit in accordance with the 15 invention, shown partly in section, Fig. 6 shows a portion of the top-unit, drawn partly in side view, Fig. 7 shows a sealing ring which forms part of the top-unit, drawn in section and in side view, 20 Fig, 8 is a cross-section through the sealing ring of Fig. 7, Fig. 9 is a plan view of a coarse filter. 6 β Fig. 1 shows in section, an assembled top-unit for a single-action sanitary shut-off valve in a condition in which it can be mounted in a threaded opening (not shown) by means of a thread 1 provided on a head-member 2 and can 5 be sealed by means of an O-ring 3. In the head-member 2 there is a spindle 4; this is sealed relatively to the head-member 2 by means of O-rings 5 and 6. By means of the arrangement of these O-rings 5 and 6, a grease-chamber 7 is formed in which the spindle 4 and also a bearing surface 8 10 are permanently mounted in grease.
At its head-end the spindle 4 has fine grooves 9; by means of these, a grip-lever (not shown) can be mounted at a particular position; thus it is possible to see the degree of opening of the valve, from the position of the lever. 15 Furthermore, a stop-member 16 is mounted on the spindle 4; by displacement thereof on the spindle 4, this allows turning movement either to the right or to the left; the spindle 4 is prevented from falling out of the head-member by a securing clip 18.
At its lower end, the spindle 4 is provided with driving elements 42, as can be seen in Fig. 6, which engage in recesses 19 in a movable sealing member 20. On the movable sealing member 20 there is provided a fabric insert 21 which will be described in greater detail in the 25 description of Figs. 4 to 10. In the underneath region of - 7 - the head-member 2, there is a non-rotatable sealing member 23; this is held in position on the movable sealing member 20 by means of a sealing ring 24, after the assembled top-unit is threaded into the manifold of the valve.
The sealing ring 24 is supported from the inside by a coarse filter 26 and from the outside by a retaining ring 28 which is a press-fit; by pressing in the retaining ring 28, a clean sealing surface-layer is obtained and furthermore, this also prevents the sealing members 20 and 23 falling out during transport and when exposed to counter-pressure, for example the pressure difference between warm and cold water if a device according to the invention is used in mixer units.
As shown in Fig. 2, the movable sealing member 20 is provided with a recess 19 for the driving elements42 (see Fig. 6) and with cut-outs 29 to allow the flow of water.
As shown in Fig. 3, the non-rotatable sealing member 23 shown therein is provided at its outer circumference with projections 30 in order to prevent rotational displacement. In the non-rotatable sealing member 23, openings 31 are provided for the passage of water; these are formed with sloping portions 32.
In Fig. 4, the movable sealing member 20 is shown in underneath view; corrugations 37 in the fabric insert 21 are located in the cut-outs 29 in the movable sealing member.
In Fig. 5, the non-rotatable sealing member 23 is shown; the fabric insert 21 can be seen on a central portion 8 33 of the sealing member 20. The fabric insert 21 is formed with a depression 34 into which the central portion 33 engages so that the fabric insert 21 is retained on the central portion 33 of the movable sealing member 20, thus 5 providing that the fabric insert 21 is rotational with the sealing member 20. The spindle 4 is shown as having a bore 35; in this, the fabric insert 21 is centred and held by a projection 36.
Fig. 6 shows a portion of Fig. 1 in side view; the 10 spindle 4 is clearly shown therein and it will be understood that this engages in the recesses 19 of the movable sealing member 20 by means of the driving elements 42. In the spindle 4, the fabric insert 21 is centred in the bore 35 by means of its projection 36. The filter-corrugations 37 15 of the fabric insert 21 project into the cut-outs 29 of the movable sealing member 20; this is in engagement with the non-rotatable sealing member 23.
In Fig. 7, the sealing ring 24 is shown in section;. this is provided at its end-faces 38 with sealing lips 39 20 as shown in detail in Fig. 8; these sealing lips provide for the sealing ring to be better adapted to the non-rotatable sealing member 23.
Fig. 9 shows the coarse filter 26 in plan view; in order to prevent large particles reaching the sealing 25 members, the coarse filter is provided with a coarse filter-mesh 40. At the exterior, the coarse filter 26 is provided with slight projections 41; these projections 41 ensure good - 9 - contact. The space 43 provides a free space; the sealing ring 24 can expand into this space, when further expansion in the longitudinal direction is no longer possible.
