Abstract
Flue gas evolved in the combustion of fossil fuels is treated with a calcium-containing suspension in a scrubber to form calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate which is partly oxidized by the addition of atmospheric oxygen to form a mixture of calcium sulphate dihydrate and calcium sulphite hemi- hydrate. This mixture is used in place of natural gypsum or anhydrite as a setting regulator in the manufacture of cement.
Description
This invention relates to the use of a mixture of calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and calcium sulphate dihydrate, the said mixture having been obtained in a flue gas desulphurization process in a composition of 17. to 997. of calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate, preferably 17. to 307, calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and 17. to 997. calcium sulphate dihydrate, preferably 607, to 997. calcium sulphate dihydrate, wherein the flue gas evolved in the combustion of fossil fuels is treated with a calcium-containing suspension in a scrubber, during which process calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate is one of the substances forming and is partly oxidized, by the addition of atmospheric oxygen, to form calcium sulphate dihydrate, some of the suspension thus produced and containing calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and calcium sulphate dihydrate among other substances is withdrawn from the scrubber circuit, fed to concentrators where it is extensively dehydrated, and then the solid having a limited residual moisture is removed from the circuit and the liquid is- preferably returned to the scrubber, for the manufacture of cement.
In the manufacture of cement, gypsum is added as a setting retardant. This additive was previously ground into the cement clinker in the form of natural gypsum or.natural anhydrite.
In view of the more stringent requirements of the clean air regulations, the treatment of flue gases evolved in the combustion of fossil fuels requires appropriate steps to reduce the sulphur content of such flue gases. They may be desulphurized in known manner by a wet desulphurization process. Depending.upon the procedure, the resulting mixture contains calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and calcium sulphate dihydrate in which the proportion of calcium sulphite hemihydrate can be controlled within specific parts hy weight with respect to the total solids content.
In the manufacture of plaster for building purposes, the only products usable are those in which the calcium sulphite hemihydrate content is very much below 17.. To obtain a product of this kind from the wet flue gas desulphurization process requires a special procedure with appropriate apparatus. The wet flue gas desulphurization process is not always aimed at producing a high-sulphate product, but instead one which can be used for other purposes.
Experiments have shown that calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate can replace calcium sulphate dihydrate, hemi-hydrate or anhydrite in its function as a setting regulator in the manufacture of cement.
The object of this invention, therefore, is Lo use a mixture of calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and calcium sulphate dihydrate as a setting regulator in the manufacture of cement, instead of the natural gypsum or natural anhydrite which was previously used.
To this end, the invention proposes the use of a mixture of calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and calcium sulphate dihydraLe in a composition of 17. to 997. calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate, preferably 17. to 307. calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate, and 17. Lo 997. calcium
- 3 sulphate dihydrate, preferably 607. to 997. calcium sulphate dihydrate.
The advantages of the invention are that a product formed during the wet flue gas desulphurization process can be cost-effectively used in the manufacture of cement. Since the wet flue gas desulphurization process can be conducted in such a manner as to produce a calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and calcium sulphate dihydrate mixture and the apparatus required is reduced, the flue gas desulphurization process becomes much more cost-effective. The use of such a product as an additive (setting regulator) in the manufacture of cement eliminates the need for any dumping, with its adverse effect on the environment, and it should be particularly stressed that environment-polluting salts partially remain in the calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate/calcium sulphate dihydrate mixture, whereas in other processes these salts have to be discharged via effluent or dumping. The use of this necessarily waste product also reduces the amount of natural crude gypsum that has to be quarried.
Claims (3)
1. Use of a mixture of calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and calcium sulphate dihydrate for the manufacture of cement, the said mixture having been obtained in a flue gas desulphurization process in a composition of 17« tc 997. of calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate, preferably 17. to 307. calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and 17. to 997. calcium sulphate dihydrate, preferably 607. to 99% calcium sulphate dihydrate, wherein the flue gas evolved in the combustion of fossil fuels is treated with a calcium-containing suspension in a scrubber, during which process calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate is one of the substances forming and is partly oxidized, preferably by the addition of aLmospheric oxygen, to form calcium sulphate dihydrale, some of lhe suspension thus produced and containing calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and calcium sulphate dihydrate among other substances is withdrawn from the scrubber circuit, fed to concentrators where it is extensively dehydrated, and then the solid having a limited residual moisture is removed from the circuit and the liquid is preferably returned to the scrubber.

Use of a mixture of calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate and calcium sulphate dihydrate as a setting regulator in the manufacture of cement, the mixture having a composition of 17. to 997. calcium sulphite hemihydrate, preferably 17. to 307. calcium sulphite hemi-hydrate, and 17. to 997. calcium sulphate dihydrate, preferably 607. to 997. calcium sulphate dihydrate.
3. Cement manufactured by use of a mixture according to either of the preceding claims.
