Abstract

A carton erectable for use from a storable folded state has a base formed by an extension piece (16) and flap (18), and sides formed by a front panel (12) and a pair of flaps (13 and 14). The carton in its storable folded state is formed from a blank with the flap (13) overlying the flap (14) and joined to it by adhesive (13A), a cut-out or aperture (15) in the underlying flap (14) allowing the lower region of the adhesive (13A) to unite with the flap (18), which is folded below the flap (14). To erect the carton, the folded blank is pushed inwardly at creases (10), (11) so that score lines (20)-(23) define edges of a tubular structure.

Description

This invention relates to cartons, for example for containing chips or hamburgers.
According to the present invention there is provided a carton comprising a front panel, a pair of flaps integrallyconnected to said front panel at two opposed edges thereof, one of said flaps having a cut-out or aperture at one corner thereof which is remote from the front panel, an extension piece which is integrally connected to one of the otherwise free edges of the front panel and a third flap which is integrally connected to the edge of the extension piece remote from the front panel and which lies adjacent to the rear of the front panel, the second of said pair of flaps overlying said one of said pair of flaps, said pair of flaps overlying said third flap and being adhesively connected together, said second flap of said pair of flaps being adhesively connected to the third flap through the cut-out or aperture in said one of said pair of flaps, said extension piece and said third flap having a width which is less than that of the front panel, and said front panel, said pair of flaps, and said third flap having score lines so that the carton can lie flat prior to use and be erected for use to include a base formed by the extension piece and part of the third flap, and sides formed by the parts of the front panel and said pair of flaps between score lines thereon.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Fig.l is a plan view of a blank for forming a carton according to the present invention, 8 474 - 3 Fig. 2 is a plan view of a partially assembled carton, and Fig, 3 illustrates an assembled carton in its erected position.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the one piece blank made from thin cardboard includes a front panel divided by parallel creases 10, 11 from two side flaps 13, 14, the width of the flaps being such that when folded over the front panel 12, they overlap. One of the flaps 13 has an adhesive strip along its outer edge, i.e. the edge remote from the front panel prior to overlapping, for engaging the outer edge of the other flap 14 in the overlapping position.
The flap 14 has a cut-out 15 at one of its corners remote from the centre panel for a purpose hereinafter described.
The front panel 12 has an extension piece 16 at one of its otherwise free edges, namely, its bottom edge and a crease 17 divides the extension piece from a third or rear flap 18 which is folded to overlie the extension piece and the lower end of the front panel to a level equal to the depth of the cut-out. Thus, when the rear flap 18 is folded over and the side flaps are in the overlapping position the adhesive on flap 13 will adhere to flap 14 and also flap 18.
The extension piece 16 and rear flap 18 are of a width less than the width of the front flap.
Secondary crease or score lines are provided, namely, a) a score line 20, 21 on each side flap 13, 14 parallel to the creases 10, 11, 8 17 4 b) a score line 22, 23 at each side of the front panel 12 adjacent to the crease 10, 11 respectively and converging from the upper end of the panel 12 to its lower end at which end the score lines 22, 23 meet the extremities of the extension piece 16, c) a score line 25 across the lower end of the front panel and upwardly concave, and d) a 'score line 26 across the rear flap 18 and which is a mirror image of score line 25.
To assemble the carton from the blank the rear flap is folded about crease 17 to overlie the rear surface of the front panel 12; the two side flaps are folded about their creases 10, 11 (firstly flap 14 then flap 13). The adhesive on flap 13 adheres to flap 14 and flap 18.
In this condition the extension piece 16 and part of the lower flap 18 projects beyond the front panel.
The carton can remain in this state until required for use. Then the sides of the carton are pressed inwards 20 so that the carton'gives'about the secondary side score line 20, 22 and 21, 23 to form sides 30 which space the front panel 12 from the rear panel formed by the overlapping flaps 13, 14 and part of flap 18.
The lower projecting portion formed by the extension 25 piece 17 and the other part of the flap 18 is then pressed upwards and 'gives' about the curved score lines 25 and 26 to form a base 31. The side edges of the base abut the bottom edges of the side walls and the base is curved upwardly within the carton. 8 4 7 4 - 5 The erected carton has a degree of rigidity sufficient for its purpose which is to hold loose articles such as chips, a hamburger, or the like product or confectionery or any other suitable article intended for immediate consumption.
To assist the user in taking, e.g. chips, from the carton, the top edge of the front panel is cut-away in a downward curve, while to compensate, the top edges of the side flaps 13, 14 are upwardly curved; thus, the back panel formed by these flaps has a top portion raised above the upper level of the side walls while the top edge of the front panel is cut-away to below said level.
