Abstract

A button sharpening tool for grinding buttons, for example on button bits, comprising a concavely peripherally profiled grinding wheel 9. The wheel 9 is rotated by matched motors 11 to either side of it and the assembly of wheel 9 and rotation motors 11 is carried by a clevice 12. The shank 14 of the clevice 12 is chucked to a machine such as a rotary drilling machine.

Description

This invention relates to the sharpening of buttons such as are found, for example, on button bits and the like.
If the buttons on a bit wear, one could replace the bit and sand the original to a repair shop some distance away. On the other hand one could resurface the buttons on site. For the latter purpose it has been proposed to utilize cup-shaped grinding tools which are complemental to the shape of the buttons after resharpening. These have not been highly successful as the cups normally only had a single layer of diamonds.
According to the present invention there is provided a button sharpening tool, comprising a peripherally profiled grinding wheel with an annular concavity, a body on which the grinding wheel is journalled, a motor carried by the body and arranged to rotate the grinding wheel, and means to rotate the body about an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of the grinding wheel.
In the preferred form of the invention there are two motors of the same kind and rating with a grinding wheel between them so as to achieve balance around the axis at right angles. Balance could, of course, also be achieved by means of a suitable counterweight.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example only, to the accompanying drawing which shows a section through a button sharpening device.
As shown in the drawing, a concavely peripherally profiled grinding wheel 9 is mounted on a shaft which project to either side of the wheel 9. The shaft 10 is fast with the. rotors of two air motors 11 mounted to either side of the wheel 9.,, nas two spaced legs 20 and The motors are carried by a body 12 which/forms a narrow neck 13 ending in a shank 14. The neck 13 enters a collar 15 and is sealed by means of suitable 0-rings. lhe collar 15 has two inlets 16 and 17 for carrying air and coolant respectively. The inlet 16 leads to a passage 18 which forks and leads to the air inlets of the motors 11. The inlet 17 leads to a suitably placed outlet 19 next to the wheel 9.
In use the shank 14 is chucked to a suitable machine for causing it to rotate, e.g. a rotary drill chuck. Air and coolant are connected and, with the assembly rotating, the wheel 9 is placed against a button which is redressed on all faces simultaneously.
If necessary the coolant could be replaced by an electrolyte and the body or the wheel connected to one side of a DC current supply and the bit to be sharpened to the other side to render the bit an anode. 479 6 6

1. CLAIMS:1. A button sharpening tool, comprising a peripherally profiled grinding wheel with an annular concavity, a body on which the grinding wheel is journalled, a motor 5 carried by the body and arranged to rotate the grinding wheel, and means to rotate the body about an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of the grinding wheel.
2. A tool as claimed in Claim 1, wherein two motors of the same kind and rating are carried by the body, with 10 the grinding wheel disposed between them.
3. A tool as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the body has a shank adapted to fit the chuck of a rotary driving mechanism, and two spaced legs between which the grinding wheel is mounted. 15
4. A tool as claimed in Claim □, wherein the shank is surrounded by a collar, the shank being rotatable relative to the collar, and a passage for a coolant is provided leading from the outside of the collar to an opening between the legs of the body. 20
5. A button sharpening tool substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing. F. li. KELLY δ CO. AGENTS FOR THE APPLICANTS. BOART INTERNATIONAL LIMITED
