Abstract

A wall tie for a cavity wall, the wall tie (1) being formed from a strip of galvanised steel which has been turned intermediate its ends by 180 DEG to provide a twist (2) which prevents the transit of moisture from one to the other end of the strip, the strip having on one side of the twist one or more apertures (4), any one of which is adapted to receive and retain a pin (5) used to hold a sheet (7) of insulation against the inner leaf of a cavity wall between the leaves (6) of which the wall tie is secured, the selected aperture (4) being determined by the thickness of the sheet (7) of insulation to be held against the inner leaf of the cavity wall.

Description

The present invention relates to a wall tie and is particularly concerned with a wall tie which may include means to hold a sheet of insulation in and against one leaf of a cavity wall.
According to the present invention, there is provided a wall tie comprising a strip of material which has intermediate its ends means for preventing moisture from travelling across the strip from one end to the other end of the an aperture in whioh is loaated strip, the strip also including/moanc fo-r—receiving and and supported a .. , . in. 9™? °f ΐ P1?81?08 Pin •oupportuSg a -pin, pog^or—other—retamer/which is adapted to position in hold a sheet of insulation material in/and against one leaf of a cavity wall^ “between the leaves of whioh the wall tie is adapted - Advent ag^uo^^- tho ctrip hac at loact on-e-aport-ero— --t-teough 'Whioh·-tho-r-ota-ine-r may·· be paaaed·,·· the retainer when in position in the strip being advantageously substantially that part of perpendicular to/the strip. 1 r Preferably, the strip is a galvanized steel strip which has been turned intermediate its ends by 180° to form a twist which prevents the transit of moisture from one to the other end of the strip, when the strip is in position in a cavity wall, %he-&t-r-ip-huving-en-one oldc oi fche twist at..... -leant One but—preferably a oog-iea· of apertures, cach-ef -wh-ioh-io- adopted· to receive·-and retain a pin, peg eg-ethei** —sataineg which, when ϊη··ρορϊί·ϊ·οη-,-io generally -p&rpond-ioular-to-the plane of thot-part of the atrip-in— -which the· aporturo ic looatadr-·the yetaift&g-being adaptod-feo The strip has a series of apertures, eaoh of whioh is adapted to rooaive —ι and support the retainer, so that the wall tie oan be used to hold in position one of a number of sheets of insulation material of different thicknesses. - 2 hold a sheet of insulatrion-against·-feha-wnar· leaf· of-a-oav-i-fey·—wall between· the · l-cavco-of-which the wa44--t-i-o· io oeoured-.It will be appreciated that when in position in a cavity wall, or eaoh the/aperture is located on the side of the twist adjacent the 5 inner leaf of the cavity wall.
The invention will hereinafter be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example only, a preferred embodiment thereof. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wall tie, Figure 2 shows the wall tie in position between the two leaves of a cavity wall.
Referring to the drawings, the wall tie comprises an elongated strip of galvanised steel, the strip being turned by 180° to provide a twist 2 which prevents the passage of moisture across the strip. The strip has bifurcated ends 3 and one or more apertures 4. Each of the apertures 4 is adapted to receive and to retain a pin 5 which, when the tie is in position between the leaves 6 of a cavity wall, is adapted to hold a sheet of insulation 7 against one of the leaves of the cavity wall.4 Each leaf of the cavity wall is made up of bricks , and the bifurcated ends 3 of the tie are embedded in mortar 8 between the bricks .
The aperture 4 to be selected in any particular instance is determined by the thickness of the sheet 7 of insulation to be held against the inner leaf of the cavity wall I The pin 5 is an interference fit in the aperture 4 and is made of a plasties material. —
