Abstract

1494071 Making gardening and like tools DOBSON PARK CONSUMER PRODUCTS Ltd 5 Feb 1975 4855/75 Heading B3A A method of making a socketed gardening or like tool, e.g. a spade or fork, comprises first fitting over a spigot portion c extending from a metal blade blank a a tubular socket member b and then forging to shape the blank to a blade or prongs, the forging extending to a region of overlapping interfitment between the socket member and the spigot portion. The socket member b has one end cold swaged to a frustoconical section d and it is welded to the blank. Finally the blank a is forged to shape and the working of the metal at the junction of the blank and socket forms a homogeneous structure with the grain flow in the direction of greatest stress under working conditions. Alternatively the blank and socket member may be pressure welded together during the forging operation. [GB1494071A]
