Abstract

1521259 Treating potatoes FISONS Ltd 27 Oct 1975 [31 Oct 1974] 47101/74 Heading C1B Growing potatoes are treated with 6 chloro 2 trichloromethylpyridine combined with at least 300 kg/ha of NH 4 NO 3 . A composition for use in the treatment comprises 250-3,750 parts by weight NH 4 NO 3 per part of compound. Other fertilizer ingredients may be present.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for treating plants.
We have found that the yield;in crops of potatoes from land which has been treated with an ammonium nitrate fertilizer can be increased by the application of 6-chloro-2trichloromethylpyridine (hereinafter called the compound) with the ammonium nitrate.
Accordingly/ the present invention provides a method -( which comprises applying to a locus at which potatoes are growing or are to be grown 6-chloro-2-trichloromethylpyridine ; in combination with, at least 300 kgs/ha of ammonium nitrate.A The method may be applied to the treatment of land ? after potatoes are sown therein, but is preferably applied to land before the potatoes have been sown, notably in the months of February to April , and is desirably worked into the land within 72 hours of application, e.g. by harrowing.
Preferably the compound and the ammonium nitrate are applied in admixture in a composition. This composition may contain other fertilizers and/or agrochemicals, e.g. herbicides, fungicides, pesticides or pigments. The other fertilizer ingredients include the potassium and/or ammonium salts of phosphoric and/or sulphuric and/or hydrochloric acids, urea, ammonium sulphate nitrate or calcium ammonium nitrate and trace element compounds. Mixtures of fertilizers may be used.
The compositions also contain the 6-chloro-2-trichloromethylpyridine and this is usually present in from 0.1 to 3.0% by weight based on the total nitrogen content of the composition.
Whilst the compositions for present use may be in the form of physical mixtures of the various ingredients, we prefer that the compound be carried by one or more of the solid fertilizer components. Thus we prefer to apply the compound in a liquid carrier, e.g. as a spray in an organic solvent or carrier, to an agitated or tumbling bed of a granular or particulate fertilizer base and to remove the liquid carrier partially or completely e.g. by drying, so as to give a particle coated partially or wholly with the compound and/or having the compound spread throughout the particle. Whilst the fertilizer base may be a crystalline or prilled material, it is preferred that it be in the form of a granulated material or blend of granules and contain at least 20% by weight of ammonium nitrate. Alternatively, the compound may be incorporated into the fertilizer base particle during granulation of fertilizer materials to form a granular base. The invention therefore also provides a process for preparing a composition, - 3 43092 notably a granular composition, containing from 250 to 3,750 parts of ammonium nitrate per part by weight of the compound which comprises admixing the compound into the ammonium nitrate.
The compositions for present use may be made by any suitable method, e.g. as outlined above or merely by dry mixing the ingredients. If desired, the particles present in the composition may be given a surface treatment and/or coating to improve their properties, e.g. an oil and/or dust coating or a polymer and/or amine coating to improve the anticaking and handling properties of the fertilizer granules therein and/or a delayed or sustained release coating, e.g. sulphur.
The compositions may be applied by any suitable method, e.g. by broadcasting or drilling and at the times indicated above. The rate of application must be such that at least 300 kgs/lia of ammonium nitrate are applied, preferably from 350 to 750 kgs/ha.
It is also desirable that the compound be applied at 0.2 to 2 kgs/ha.
Certain of the compositions for present use are novel and from another aspect the invention provides a composition which contains ammonium nitrate and 6-chloro-2-trichloromethylpyridine characterised in that for each part by weight of 6-chloro-2-trichloromethylpyridine there are present from 250 to 3,750 parts, - 4 42092 preferably 300 to 1,000, by weight of ammonium nitrate.
The method of the invention will now be described by way of illustration only in the following Examples in which all parts and percentages are by weight unless stated otherwise.
Example 1 Λ fertilizer base was prepared by blending together granular ammonium sulphate nitrate, granular ammonium phosphate and a 9:0:43, N:P2O5:K2O base and then divided into two lots. One lot was used directly, the other lot was coated with 6-chloro-210 trichloromethylpyridine by spraying a solution of the compound onto a bed of the granules tumbling in a rotating pan and then drying the granules. The granules contained 34% ammonium nitrate, 9.80¾ total NH^ from all sources and, when present, 0.048¾ of 6-chloro2-trichloromethylpyridine.
The granules were then applied to land, in which potatoes were to be grown, at a rate of 1,200 kgs/ha. The results of treatment with the coated and uncoated granules are set out below: Oontrol granules (No compound) Coated granules tonne potatoes produced. 35.5 39.1 - 5 42092 Example 2 Λ fertilizer formulation was prepared by blending together granular ammonium nitrate, granular ammonium phosphate, a 4.5:16.6:0 Ν,Ρ,Κ granular base and a 9.5:0:43 Ν, Ρ, K granular base. The resultant blend was a 15:15:19 Ν, Ρ, K fertilizer containing 28% ansnonium nitrate and 14.5% total N. The fertilizer was split into two halves; and one half was treated with C-chloro-2-trichloromethylpyridine by spraying a solution of the compound onto a bed of the granules tumbling in a rotating pan to provide 0.09% of the compound on the granules.
Hie treated and untreated fertilizers were applied to land in which potatoes were planted, to provide 180 kg/ha N. The following results were obtained: Control (no compound) 52.5 tonnes potatoes/ba Treated fertilizer 54.3 tonnes potatoes/ha
