Abstract
1531230 Footwear with out-turned uppers CLARKS Ltd 18 Nov 1975 [31 Dec 1974] 56246/74 Heading A3B Footwear has an upper 10 with its lower edge 11 turned outwardly and secured to a rand strip extending along the margin of and secured to top surface of a sole unit, the cavity bounded by the rand strip being filled with a resilient foam rubber or foam plastics insert 17. The inner edge of the rand strip is chamfered. The insert 17 may be covered by a sock 14 whose outer edge is secured between the upper edge 11 and the rand strip and also to an insole 12 below which is a reinforcing runner 15 with an outsole 18 adhered thereto. The upper 10, sock 14, rand strip 13, insole 12 and runner 15 are stitched together at 16.
Description
This invention relates to footwear.
According to this invention there is provided a boot or shoe comprising a sole unit, a rand strip extending alohg the margin of and secured to the top surface of the sole unit, the cavity bounded by the rand strip being filled with a resilient foam material, and an upper whereof the lower edge is turned outward and disposed on the top surface of the rand strip, either directly or through the intermediary of a sock covering the upper surface of the foam material, and is secured to the rand strip.
Where an insole is used, it is incorporated between the rand strip and the sole unit.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows diagrammatically a cross-sectional view.of a shoe according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the shoe construction is of the veldtschoen type, the lower edge portion 11 of the upper 10 being turned outward for sewing to an insole 12. Between the edge portion 11 and the insole 12 there are however disposed a rand strip 13 and the outer edge of a sock 14. The inner edge of the rand strip is chamfered as shown. In the illustrated construction a reinforcing runner 15 is disposed below the insole, and the upper, sock, rand strip, insole and runner are secured together by stitching 16. The rand strip 13 is relatively thick, and the cavity which is bounded by the rand strip is filled by a resilient foamed rubber or foamed plastics insert 17, which is secured by an adhesive to the sock and the insole.
Subsequently a sole unit 18 is secured by an adhesive to the runner 15.
The presence of the rand strip gives the shoe a robust external appearance, whilst the resilient insert makes the shoe very comfortable to wear, particularly if the sock and the upper are made from leather by reason of the perspiration absorption properties of leather.
