Abstract
1510150 Variable attenuators SIEMENS AG 2 May 1975 [10 May 1974] 18364/75 Heading H4R The duality condition is maintained between the impedances of the bridge and shunt arms of a bridged-T-section of an electrically controllable attenuator by providing variable impedance elements which are maintained equal and one of which is connected via a transmission line transformer whose electrical length is an odd-numbered multiple of a quarter wavelength at the mean operating frequency. The surge impedance of the line transformer is preferably equal to that of the attenuator.The line transformer may be a coaxial line, a symmetrical twin-conductor line or a waveguide. As shown the impedance elements are PIN diodes r 2 , Fig. 2, and r 1 , Fig. 3, and the attenuator input and output are constituted by coaxial lines Le, La. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 a quarterwavelength line transformer LT is connected to shunt impedance r 2 . The value of the impedance r 2 is determined by a device EE which supplies a common current ir to both diodes via impedance R 0 and choke Dr. The embodiment of Fig. 3 comprises a line transformer LT' in the bridge arm of the attenuator.
