Abstract

Compsns for the investigation and treatment of microbial systems or infections contain (a) a potentiating amt of a cpd of formula (I): (where (i) R is substd phenoxyalkyl or CHO and R1 and R2 are lower alkyl or together form a spirocycloalkyl ring with 4-6C atoms outside the pteridine ring, or (ii) R is CH2Cl and R1=R2=Me, or (iii) R is 1-bromoethyl and R1=R2=n-Pr) and (b) an effective amt of p-aminobenzoic acid competitor (e.g. a sulphonamide) and/or a dihydrofolatereductase inhibitor (e.g. a pyrimidine deriv). The compsns have a synergistic activity against bacteria and protozoa which produce at least part of their own tetrahydrofolate cofactor. They can be used as pharmaceuticals and in diagnosis and microorganism identification. Certain combinations (esp. of (I), sulphaquinoxaline and diaveridin) are esp. effective against coccidiosis in poultry. [FR2215964A2]
