1446301 5-Nitroimidazole derivatives CRC COMPAGNIA DI RICERCA CHIMICA SA 9 April 1975 [19 April 1974] 14518/75 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of 5-nitroimidazole derivatives of the formula wherein R is (C 1 -C 4 )alkyl; R 1 is hydrogen, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, (C 1 -C 4 ). alkyl or a group OM wherein M is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal; A is oxygen and n is 0 or 1, comprises reacting a compound of the formula wherein # is a 2<SP>1</SP>-haloethyl group, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an ethylsulphino or ethylmercapto group, or the radical of a variegated salt -CH 2 CH 2 S 2 O 3 M; with a compound of the formula ZR 2 wherein Z is a halogen atom or the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt or a sulphino group, or, where R 2 is a sulphydryl group, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal atom, and Z is different from B, and R 2 is (C 2 -C 4 )alkyl, or if Z is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, a sulphydryl group, and, if desired, oxidizing the resultant compound wherein n is zero to one wherein n is 1 suitably in the presence of lithium perchlorate in an electrical cell.
