Abstract

1459767 Producing hydrocarbons electrolytically LEAD FREE CHEMICALS (CI) Ltd 5 April 1974 [12 April 1973] 17608/73 Heading C7B Liquid hydrocarbons, useful as fuel, are produced by electrolysis of an aqueous heated electrolyte containing seaweed or vegetable material of the family Cruciferae, e.g. cabbage or cauliflower, in the presence of a carbon source located between the electrodes. The required product is obtained by varying the temperature, pressure or continuity of the process. A cell having steel cathode 14, Ag anode 13 and a porous carbon - (e.g. charcoal) containing member 15 may be used, in which equally spaced Al strips 16 extend across the base. Heater 23 and thermostat 21 maintain a temperature of 87-98‹C. Outlets 17, 19 have pressure relief valves 18, 20 whereby gas generated electrolytically pressurizes the vessel and also drives off products via pipe 17. A pressure of at least 4 psig is advised. An alternative cell is cylindrical with concentric annular electrodes, carboncontainer and Al strips Fig. 3 (not shown), the anode being outermost, and the heater being on the cell axis. An internal annular baffle depends downwardly from the periphery of the cell wall to define a space for product collection. Pulsating D. C. may be used. The product may range from diesel oil quality to 100 octane, the latter being continuously producable by continuously supplying electrolyte and removing product. In batch processes, product quality is lowered (as. octane rating) with time. [GB1459767A]
