Abstract

1497540 Fibrous structures SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 12 Feb 1975 [14 Feb 1974] 6857/74 Heading B5B Films are fibrillated into a coherent mass of fibres of rectangular cross-section at least 50% of which have a ratio of the length of the longest side to that of the shortest side of 1À5 or less and at least have a ratio of 2À0 or less. The fibrous mass may be produced from a film of a molecularly orientable thermoplastic polymer of thickness 100 microns or less by longitudinally stretching it, transporting it in the longitudinal direction and cutting it into the required dimensions by means of a plurality of needles, arranged for instance on the surface of a rotating drum, having a linear speed in the direction of film movement of from 10 to 60 times the film speed. At least some of the needles are arranged in rows having a needle density of at least 15 per cm. In the Example, fibrous structures are made from polypropylene alone and blended with a styrene-butadiene block copolymer. The films used are preferably tubular films which have been flattened to give a 2-layer film. 4 layers are also used. [GB1497540A]
