Abstract

1443654 Fluids for drilling wells TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 8 May 1974 [25 May 1973] 20268/74 Heading C5F Aqueous drilling fluid comprises at least one dispersant, hydratable clayey material, weighting agent and/or water loss improving agent and an aqueous phase containing a minor amount of at least one phosphate compound selected from (A) compounds of the Formula I wherein n is from 4 to 50, R is a C 8-12 alkyl group, R<SP>a</SP> is hydrogen or a C 8-12 alkyl group, R<SP>b</SP> is hydrogen, a compound of the Formula III or M, M is an alkali metal or ammonium radical, and R<SP>c</SP> is hydrogen or M, and (B) compounds of the Formula II wherein n is from 4 to 50, R<SP>d</SP> is a (C 8-20 alkyl radical, R<SP>e</SP> is hydrogen, R<SP>d</SP>(OCH 2 CH 2 ) n -, or M, and R<SP>f</SP> is hydrogen or M. The drilling fluid suitably contains 0À01-25 wt. per cent of the phosphate compound. The fluid exemplified can have sodium chloride brine as the aqueous phase and can also comprise ferrochromelignosulphonate, attapulgite clay, calcium hydroxide and/or barite. The phosphate compounds used in the examples are (a) a mixture of compounds of the Formula II wherein the alkyl group R<SP>d</SP> is derived from C 12-16 alcohols, and n is an average of 7, (b) a compound of the Formula IV (c) a compound of the Formula V and (d) a compound of the Formula VI [GB1443654A]
