1450300 Haloketones BAYER AG 1 Aug 1974 [2 Aug 1973 17 May 1974] 33924/74 Heading C2C An alpha-haloketone of the Formula (1<SP>1</SP>) wherein R represents a C 1 -C 4 alkyl group which may be partly or completely substituted by halogen, or it represents an aryl group which may be substituted one or more times by halogen atoms, by hydroxyl, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or C 1 -C 4 alkoxy groups or by C 1 -C 4 alkyl groups partly or completely substituted by halogen atoms, or by a nitro group; X represents a halogen atom, Y represents halogen, a halogen atom or a cyano-, thiocyano or C 1 -C 4 carbalkoxy group; and Z represents a cyano or thiocyano group is prepared by reacting a compound of the above formula in which X is hydrogen at a temperature of from 0‹ to 100‹ C. and in the presence of an acid acceptor, with at least the stoichiometrically required quantity of a halogen, or by reacting an alpha-haloketone in the form of its alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt with at least the stoichiometrically required quantity of a halogen.
