Abstract

1455107 Tampons J W DENSON 11 Feb 1974 [15 Feb 1973] 6204/74 Heading A5R A tampon 10 for obtaining cell samples especially from the vagina, for diagnosis, comprises a cylindrically-shaped, semi-rigid, supporting body 13 having a surface which is at least partially covered with a film 12 of polycarbonate or of porous material composed of mixed esters of cellulose. The polycarbonate film is preferably 8 to 13 Á thick and contains pores of a cross-section from 5 to 8 Á. The cellulose ester film preferably contains pores of a size from 8-25 Á. The film covering may have a corrugated surface. Body 13 is of a material such as cotton, cellulose, nylon etc. Suitable mixed esters of cellulose are listed. After obtaining cell samples, the film is removed from the tampon, placed on a slide, and the cellular material fixed and stained for examination thereof. The polycarbonate film is dissolved in a solvent such as chloroform before examination. [GB1455107A]
