Abstract

1444546 Progressive container filling; filling valves operating M B OSBORNE 17 Oct 1973 [28 Oct 1972 6 March 1973] 49813/72 and 10696/73 Heading B8T An apparatus for filling flowable material e.g. liquid or powder into moving containers 8 comprises a tank 1 from which the material is discharged, means such as an overflow trough 3 for the maintenance of a constant head in the tank 1, a row Fig. 1 (not shown), of a plurality of discharge outlets 9 and 7 for filling containers 8 through outlet 7 and by-passing through outlet 9 respectively thereby maintaining a constant rate of flow discharge, the outlets being progressively and alternately openable by a valve 11 with the aid of an actuator 14 acting in timed relation to the continuous movement of containers 8 below the discharge outlets 7 and 9. A sensor having slidable member 18, actuator 20 and a pneumatic valve 21 and operating in the absence of containers 8 below the discharge outlets to cause the actuator 14 via a jack 22 to shut off discharge outlet 7. The construction is such that when a container 8 is below the discharge outlets 7 and 9 the actuator 14, which is biased to the left (as seen in Fig. 3) by spring 12<SP>1</SP> keeps outlet 7 open for material discharge into the container and also keeps outlet 9 partially closed to maintain a constant rate of discharge from the vessel 1, and with the aid of a cam 16 acting in timed relation to the container movement moves the valve 11 to shut off outlet 7 and open outlet 9 so that the material is discharged into a reservoir 31 to be recycled back to the tank 1. An adjustment screw 17 is operated to define the amount by which the outlet 7 can be opened. A jack 26 may be operated by a second container sensor (not shown) to rock all the actuators 14 to cause the valve members 11 to shut off outlets 7 if the supply of the containers cease or the containers stop moving.
