Abstract

1435085 Shrink and crease proofing keratinous material CIBA-GEIGY AG and IWS NOMINEE CO Ltd 15 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 40646/72 Heading D1P Keratinous material is proofed against felting shrinkage, relaxation shrinkage and creasing and existing or future pressing is rendered more durable by treating the material with a polyene having at least two olefinic double bonds each beta to an oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atom and curing the polyene on the material by reaction with a polymercaptan having at least two mercaptan groups, the combined weight of polyene and polymercaptan incorporated in the product being 0.5 to 15% by weight of the keratinous material treated. The sum of the number of mercapto groups and the number of said olefinic double bonds is more than 4, e.g. 5 to 8. The polymercaptan comprises either the residue of a polyhydric alcohol after removal of its alcoholic hydroxyl groups or the polyacyl residue of a polycarboxylic acid, with bound to the residue through ether or ester oxygen atoms at least two chains each containing either the residue of a dihydric alcohol after removal of its hydroxyl groups or the diacyl residue of a dicarboxylic acid, with bound through ether or ester oxygen atoms to said residues of a dihydric alcohol or a dicarboxylic acid either an acyl residue of an aliphatic mercaptancarboxylic acid or a residue of an aliphatic mercaptanalcohol after removal of a hydroxyl group. The keratinous material may be sheeps wool, alpaca, cashmere, mohair, vicuna, guanaco, camel hair, llama hair or blends thereof. It may be blended with polyamide, polyester, polaycrylonitrile or regenerated cellulose. The material may be in the form of fibres, filaments, fleeces, tops, card sliver, noils, yarns, threads and woven, knitted, non-woven and pile fabrics. The polyene and polymercaptan may have applied in either order or together as an aqueous solution or dispersion or non-aqueous solution. Preferably 0.8 to 1.2 mercaptan groups are present per olefinic double bond. The reactants may be applied to the material by. padding or immersing the material in a bath, by spraying or by exhaustion from aqueous solution or emulsion. Curing i.e. reaction of the polymercaptan with the polyene may be facilitated by catalyst by acids, amines or peroxides and/or by heating to 35 to 180‹C. A fabric may be flat set before or after treatment with the polyene and the polymercaptan using steam a swelling agent (e.g. urea) and diethanolamine carbonate or a swelling agent and a reducing agent. In example 1 run 3 the the polyene i.e. (XLI) where E stands for COCH=CHCOOH and the polymercaptan (the tris(thioglycollate) of a glycerol-propylene oxide polyol) and diethylene tetramine as catalyst were dissolved in perchloroethylene and padded onto a wool flannel to 300% uptake and dried in a fanned oven at 65‹C for 15 minutes.
